Ensberg has never played 1B in the majors, and only 5 times in his minor league career.

I'm not saying you couldn't try him there. There shouldn't be any reason why he couldn't make the transition. If Conine is traded, he could be a logical replacement for him, but certainly not a long-term solution as Votto will eventually be there.

I don't want to see him taking any time away from EE the rest of this season and I'm just afraid it would be too tempting for Mackanin.

Ensberg is making 4.35 million this season, and is arbitration eligible for next season. We don't really have room for him this season, and he would be a pretty expensive platoon player next year, if we were to keep him.

I would not trade for him, but if he was to slide through waivers (not likely) I certainly would attempt to pick him up. It is curious that the Astros would release him, unless they pretty much have a deal for him in place. Since the All-Star Break he has swung the bat better (OPS over 1.000), indicating he may be regaining his form. If the Reds were to obtain him after he cleared waivers they could play him through August. If he continued to hit well I am pretty sure they could move him before the August 31st deadline for a prospect. If he doesn't perform well they could always just release him. Since he would have passed through waivers it would cost the Reds only two months at the major league minimum. I would take that chance.

no way we want him...he have enough dead weight on this team...why do you think Houston let him go?

I might have him as a back-up; I would want Votto at first.

Havent you been one of the ones really pushing to get rid of Hatty so we could make room for Votto?

It's always nice to have a back up first baseman.

Why we wouldn't the Reds want him? IMO he immediately improves the bench. Jettison Chad Moeller or Juan Castro; or send Pedro Lopez back to the minors. Ensberg has reached levels in 2003, 2005 and 2006 that those three will never see. The cost is minimal and if he doesn't work out let him go after the season. If he does bounce back you have yourself a steal. The Reds need to kiss a couple of frogs and hope a prince or appear.
