The Yankees and Dodgers have agreed to a deal, pending medical reviews, that will send reliever Scott Proctor back to the Dodgers for utility infielder Wilson Betemit.

The Dodgers have been working to fortify their pitching staff after injuries in recent weeks to key pitchers such as closer Takashi Saito and starter Randy Wolf, who recently had a setback while rehabbing. Derek Lowe and Brad Penny also suffered what appears to be minor injuries in recent days.

The Yankees are attempting to remake their bullpen, starting with trades of Proctor and the out-of-favor Kyle Farnsworth. While Farnsworth could make it past Tuesday's 4 p.m. waiver dealdine due to his $5.5 million salary, the Yankees are aiming to obtain star closer Eric Gagne from Texas as a replacement. The Yankees are one of four or five teams in the mix for Gagne, including also the rival Red Sox, the Mets and the Brewers, and will know by the deadline whether he's theirs.

Proctor is 2-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 52 games this season. Betemit has hit 10 homers and driven in runs. Proctor originally came from the Dodgers in 2003 in a deal that sent Robin Ventura to L.A.

Good deal for LA. With all their young prospects they don't really need Betemit and get back a good bullpen arm in Proctor.

Proctor's been used heavily by Torre over the past couple years. I'm surprised that his arm is still attached to his body.

So on the surface it would seem Freel would have been of some interst to the Yanks. Or Nacho Libre.

Also seems Weathers could have had some value to the Dodgers.

Proctors K's are down, his walks are up and his DIPS ERA is 5.52.

He's had his one good season, which was probably as much luck as good pitching.

He's simply not very good.

The Yanks just traded for Molina from Anaheim the other day. They wouldn't need Valentin.

Article I read said they were looking for some pop off the bench and liked the fact Betemit was a switch hitter.

Obviously not an exact match of players but it would seem at least in passing there may have been an opportunity.
