I thought I would continue the RedsZone tradition of naming other teams DFA's and inquiring if they would help us in any way...

As you were....

not very good but certainly better Ellison. I don't see him as having any value in the long term.

I think Craig Monroe is a better fit than Jason Ellison. We already have a player like Ellison (only better) in Norris Hopper--righty-hitting contact hitters with speed who can also play all three OF spots, but Hopper has been much better this season, and has more upside than Ellison.

Monroe would provide a right-handed power-hitting bat off the bench, and provide depth at the corner OF spots. He could be this club's version of Glenn Braggs. According to Baseball-Reference.com, the player most similar to Monroe at Age 29 is Craig Wilson--a player many of us (including myself) were clamoring for the Reds to acquire prior to this season.

I think Monroe will do well for his new team during 2007, but next year, I think he'll revert back to his normal stats, which are underwhelming. On top of that, he's over-paid, and there's barely room for this year (and no room for him next year).

Monroe lost his ability to hit for power. he lost his ability to hit for average two years ago. He was always a great RBI guy per at-bat, but even those days are gone. He might be able to put 2 or 3 weeks together where he does hit for power in th future, but he's destined to OPS below .700 for the rest of his short career. Defensively, there's probably no one better in the Majors. He makes no mistakes in the field, can get to any ball, and has a great arm.

But do you want another no-bat, defensive specialist on the team?

Depends on how much he would cost, but he would be a pretty good asset as a 4th OF. Especially to bring in off the bench to counter a LH reliever.

This is the kind of guy you take a shot on..not guys like Conine.

He's almost 5 million for the year and 30 years old. His numbers this season aren't too impressive. He'd be a decent pitch hitter since he does still have some pop, but only if he were cheap.

Too much cash.

He's part of the $20M that's coming off the books for Detroit (about $11M from Pudge), which will allow them to add a Left-handed power bat this off-season, their greatest need.

Adam Dunn in Detroit?

:dunno:

that would be incredibly depressing if it were beacuse of the option not being picked up.

I didn't say I liked the idea.

I don't like the idea of Dunn's option not being picked up, but I love the idea of Dunn being packaged in a deal going to Detroit for Jeremy Bonderman or Andrew Miller. :)

The Cubs just picked up Monroe for a PTBNL according to ESPN Radio. There is some cash in the deal, but didn't pick up which way it's going.

Bummer about Monroe getting cut. How will the Reds trade Adam Dunn for him now?

Can a player be put on waivers twice in one waiver wire season? Don't give up hope yet.
