Saturday's probables:

Louisville - Steve Kelly has been brought up from AA Chattanooga to make this start. Kelly is a Cincinnati native. He has struggled this year in Louisville posting a 1 - 6 record with a 6.89 ERA. He has given up 70 hits in a little over 48 innings pitched. He has walked 24 and struck out 24. His WHIP is 1.94. Game starts at 7 EDT.

Chattanooga - It's Cueto time. Johnny will be making his first start back in AA after a brief stint at Louisville. It seems odd that they would send Cueto back, while at the same time bringing someone up from Chattanooga to Louisville to pitch on the same day. Kelly must have been on a 'rehab' assignment. I am looking for another strong outing from JC. Game starts at 7:15 EDT.

Sarasota - Alexander Smit on the bump for Sarasota. He is making his second start since his promotion from Dayton. His first was a solid effort: 5 IP 4 H 2 ER 3 BB 4 K. Game starts at 6 EDT.

Dayton - Jordan Smith toes the rubber for the Dragons on Saturday. He is enjoying a solid second season in the Reds' organization. He sports a tidy 3.44 ERA and a respectable 1.24 WHIP. In 120 IP he has fanned 82 while walking just 33. Game starts at 7 EDT.

Billings - Scott Carroll will be making his third appearance Billings. He was taken in the 3rd round of the June draft. He has not allowed a run in 4 IP. Giving up 1 hit and 2 walks. He has struck out 6. Game starts at 9:05 EDT.

GCL - I am unsure of the probable for the GCL Reds. Efrain Rodriguez looks like a good possibility. Rodriguez has worked in both the rotation and out of the bullpen this season. He has crafted a 2.30 ERA. Game starts at 10 AM EDT.

I believe Kelly was still with the Louisville team, just on the AA roster. He never went down to Chat.

That is probably correct. The blurb I read stated that he was activated from the Chattanooga disabled list. I assumed if he was on the Chattanooga DL that he was with them, but I guess that wasn't the case.

For anyone who is upset about Cueto being demoted and doesn't already know, Cueto is back in AA to help get the Lookouts into the playoffs.

Guess they would rather win AA titles than try to help the major league team.

Assuming Cueto could help the Reds win this year, it would still be too little too late. I think it's great that they're trying to get their minor league affiliates into the playoffs so the players can get used to playing under pressure.

Here's a question for the board. If the Yankees can push Joba Chamberlain from AA to AAA to the 8th inning setup man in one year. How come the Reds couldn't do the same with Bailey or Cueto earlier this season when the bullpen was the Reds biggest weakness. The Yankees still say that Joba will return next year as a starter. It doesn't seem to be hurting his development.

Well, first off the Yankees surely don't care one ounce about arbitration years being wasted. Secondly, I don't think that its a good idea to do that with a starter. Chamberlain has pitched 94 innings this year. Lets say he pitches another 20 (which is actually a lot for a reliever) before the season is over, he will only have thrown 114 innings this year. Next year, as a starter he will be looked upon to throw 170+ innings. Thats a giant leap in innings to make.

I think its because of the Yankees can use these guys up to fit their needs and if they screw one up, they just go buy somebody else. The Reds need to treat any starter prospect who might have building block potential with kid gloves. The Reds just can't replace these guys like the Yankees can.

Nice to see Votto rebound. He looked mentally down 2 weeks ago. He is showing he has the power. He is only 1 hr behind last year. So he had a better season last year, some years are better than others. .900 OPS guys are just there to throw away.........

FWIW, I hate to bring it up. But Cueto was "horrible" beyond words. Mr.headcase have his feelings hurt? I mean, did he even try? I tell you, pitchers with immaturity problems give me pause.

Thanks for the responses on the Yankees handling of Joba vs. how the Reds are handling their pitching prospects. From what I've heard, it looks as though the Yanks will be going with Wang, Mussina (under contract), Pettitte, Hughes and either Joba or Ian Kennedy next year. I'll be interested to see if Joba is hurt by how the Yankees are using him. The guy has great stuff.

Louisville comes all the way back from a 7-1 deficit to win 8-7. Bats' bullpen allows only 3 hits in 5 innings of work while striking out 9. Todd C. works 2 scoreless frames while striking out 5. Mcbeth gets his 9th save of the year. His ERA is now 1.38.

EDIT-And still the big league team trots out the likes of Mike Stanton and Eddie Guardado.

I think the time has come to call up Salmon and McBeth , send down Guardado and DFA Stanton. Krivsky has had a trial period of trying out Majewski and Guardado to see if those two have anything left, and I think we have the answer with Guardado. From what I have seen, Gary can be effective if you don't keep him in too long. 1 inning seems to be his limit. Perhaps Coffey's work in AAA will help his confidence.
