Prior to tonight's game the Reds selected from Class AAA Louisville the contract of RHP Kirk Saarloos and optioned to Louisville LHP Phil Dumatrait.

Also, RHP Victor Santos, who was designated for assignment on Saturday, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Louisville.

Dumatrait went 0-2, 14.18 in his 4 starts for the Reds.

Santos went 1-4, 5.14 in 32 relief appearances for the Reds.

Maybe Saarloos will be the long guy for the next 4 games till Dumatrait's turn comes up, at which point they'll recall Belisle....?

What did everyone expect, Walter Johnson to be resurrected?

I hope they give Sarloos a chance to start--he was crummy out of the 'pen but if I recall correctly, he was doing ok starting this spring and was fighting for the fifth spot. He really can't be much worse than Dumatrait was.

Garbage is basically all they have. It's just varying the levels of odor.

I actually would've preferred them recalling Belisle (unless the plan is to do that when Phil's rotation spot is up next). Matt isn't very good, but I have more faith in him than Saarloos.

Well, ...what do you do with Dumatrait now? He's gonna be out of options next year. He's never pitched as a reliever. He's had some success at the AA and AAA level, but he's just been brutal at the major league level. I guess you take him off your 40 man roster asap and hope he slips through waivers.

I wouldn't worry about Dumatrait. He is redundant with Maloney, Livingston, and, gulp, Gosling.

More from Trent...

Saarloos will be pitching out of the bullpen, the reason Pete gave was that basically he's the only guy who gives them any length, which makes sense. They will bring up a starter later -- no need to bring up a starter for Saturday today. Also said Eddie would pretty much be the 12th guy out of the bullpen and be used only in situations like yesterday. I asked if you could afford that, and the short answer -- I'll give you the long answer later -- was 'yes.'

When I went to the game a couple of weeks ago, there was a guy sitting a few rows below mine who was wearing a Saarloos jersey. I'm sure he's very happy about this move. I can't think of anyone else not named Saarloos who will be that excited, though. ;)

That guy had to be Saarloos.;)

Webb is going for the consecutive scoreless innings record.

IIRC....Saarloos is going for the consecutive batters to reach base record. Didn't he get sent out after allowing 10 in a row to reach base?

Well, today I got my daily dose of How Bad the Reds Pitching Is before the game even started. Efficient, if nothing else.

I so don't care anymore. I have the weather channel on instead of the game. It's a sad, sad day in Casa Creek.

That's almost a Jeff Austin or Josias Manzanillo-esque pitching line... :thumbdown

Marcus McBeth has an ERA of 1.38 at Louisville with 9 saves...Yep but the Reds brought back the best option in SAARLOOS????? ONLY reason is if he was brought up to put on waivers for another team to stupidly take him... no other reason... when will WAYNE get it? he doesnt know pitching and he sure doesnt listen to scouts. I cant imagine anybody said "Wayne Saarloos is your best option".. he should be FIRED if ANY scout said this!

The reds control McBeth and Belisle for next year. Saarloos on the other hand will have the free agent market.

I would imagine the reds are seeing if there is any niche this clown can fill before they let him go free agent on them. When they brought him over, it was trumpeted that he was going to be a starter, the reds could just run him out there a couple of times. If he makes a Dumatrait sized crater on them, they can let him go and say...Glad to be rid of that.
