The Marlins FSN just ran an interview with Tony Perez. He's obviously in town for the Davy Concepcion number retiring ceremony.

They asked him about game 7 of the 1975 World Series, and he told a story about Sparky Anderson.

Doggie, in his inimitable style, said he saw Sparky walk down the runway to the clubhouse in the sixth inning. He followed him and asked "Sparky, what's wrong?"

Sparky replied "What do you mean what's wrong?! We're down 3-0 in the 7th game of the world series, that's what's wrong!!"

Tony said "I told him not to worry, we'll get a couple of guys on this inning and I'll hit a home run and bring them in".

"And I did".

Man, I miss Doggie. I'm glad he has a job in Miami where he's so revered in the local community. But I'll never, ever forgive Jim Bowden for firing him.

He could have stayed in Cincinnati forever as a coach, but he was disgraced and run out of town on a rail by that gutless punk-ass. Fired with a phone call, after all he meant to the Reds and Cincinnati.

Anyway, it was very cool hearing that awesome voice tell that story.

I was born in 1977 and my "memory" of being a sports fan really begins in the early 80's. I enjoy the history of all sports, especially my favorite teams. But the only team in any sport that I truly wish I would have witnessed was the Big Red Machine. I've always had the feeling the Perez would have been my favorite.

I've agreed with a lot of your posts, but I can't think of a post that I agreed with more than the above.

DITTO!

Bowden could draft 10 Cy Young award winners and still be worthless to me for the way he treated Tony Perez.

funny a lot of people...a lot of people here at Redszone wanted Tony booted and agreed with Jimbo the day that happened.

Maybe I'm misreading that post, but RedsZone wasn't around when old leatherpants did the deed.

May, 1993 (20-24)

7 years prior to Redszone.

Krivsky would have given Doggie a 3 year extension for going 20-24!

Probably the same people on RedsZone who were against Sparky Anderson being hired. It's probably in the archives somewhere.

Bowden couldn't draft 10 Cy Young winners if they were right in front of his face, with a big sign attached to their body that says "I'm a future Cy Young winner"

He'd still be looking for that "5 tool outfielder"

Mind reader or can you actually point out posts where people have said such things?
