... or a slightly used one.

per Rotoworld

Reds acquired outfielder Buck Coats from the Cubs for a player to be named.
Oddly, the Reds apparently weren't confident he'd get to them on waivers. Coats, 25, was hitting .303/.363/.435 for Triple-A Iowa before being designated for assignment last week to make room for Craig Monroe on the 40-man roster. He can play some infield, while will help his chances of having a career as a 25th man. That's about the best he can hope for. The Reds figure to call him up next month.

please bring him up now and find Ellison a new home.

From John Fay:

The Reds obtained Buck Coats from the Cubs for a player to be named. Coats is going to Louisville. That's all I know. Will update. A release is the works.

John Fay thinks the Reds are about to release someone to make room.they have to make room on the 40 man. I am sure it won't be Ellison, he's going to be in LF next year.

How many outfielders does a team need? Left handed ones at that....

There are several players that can be moved to the 60 day DL to clear room on the 40 man. As far as a release being in the works, I think he means a press release.

That could be. My initial thought was a player was about to get released but a press release makes more sense.

I must say if the Reds acquired Coats to take Ellison's spot (or to move Ellison off the roster altogether), then I'll be thrilled.

Just checked the roster, Coats doesn't show up yet but Castro has been moved to the 60 day, so there's your roster move.

Castro was put on the 60 day DL back on the 15th.

I noticed Castro on the 60 Day DL last week, so we must have still had an empty spot. Of course, we still have several candidates that could go on the 60 Day if necessary, at least until the season's end (Freel, Livingston).

The official release...

REDS ACQUIRE BUCK COATS FROM CUBS

Outfielder Will Report To Louisville

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati Reds Executive Vice President and General Manager Wayne Krivsky today announced the acquisition of OF Buck Coats from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Coats, 25, this season batted .303 with 11 HR, 59 RBI and 18 stolen bases for Class AAA Iowa. His 19-game hitting streak from June 23 to July 14 tied for the fourth-longest this season in the Pacific Coast League.

Coats had spent his entire career with the Cubs organization since he was selected in the 18th round of the June 2000 draft. Last season he made his Major League debut with Chicago, batting .167 in 18 games. He hit his only career home run on September 24 off Aaron Harang.

The Georgia native was a Midwest League All-Star in 2003 with Class A Lansing and a Southern League All-Star in 2005 while playing for Class AA West Tenn.

Coats will be optioned to Class AAA Louisville.

In 2003-2005 he played SS. Not suggesting he's going to do that, but he could be a potential utility guy.

Interesting fact about Coats.

He hit his only career homer off Aaron Harang on Sept. 24 of last year.

If we didn't give up anything significant, Coats isn't a bad pickup. I checked out his stats on the Baseball Cube and was struck by how Generic Reserve Outfielder his lines have been. Decent but not great BA, OBP could stand a few more walks but takes enough to be above hacker level, Ks enough that he doesn't look like a slap hitter but isn't whiffing at slugger levels, etc. Minimal home-run power. Not a prolific basestealer but efficient. If he can play a passable center field, he'd be an okay fifth-outfielder option next year.

In that game, Royce Clayton had a walk off hit. He pinch hit for Dewayne Wise. Todd Hollandsworth was also in that game. Ray Ray Olmedo pinch ran for TH in the 9th. What a mess.

Harang that day was at his usual. 9 ip, 6 h, 2 r, 0 bb, 9 k, W

Coats' stats have the look of a player who miiiiiight just develop some more power. He already has some of the speed and not-terrible contact skills.

Not a bad player, but I can't help but wonder if the Reds are planning on unloading Chris Dickerson or something like that.

There is certainly starting to be a glut of left-handed outfielders in the upper minors. You would think one or two of them will be trade bait this winter.

Depends on what you get back. I am sure that quite a few teams might give up a perceived 4th or 5th starter for Joey. Just hope it is someone like Harang that breaks their perceived ceiling and makes even someone like Billy Beane look dumb.

Forgive me if I don't get excited about a 25 year old corner OF who can't OPS .800 in the PCL. Looks like Jason Ellison 2.0 to me.

Forgive me if I don't get excited about a 25 year old corner OF who can't OPS .800 in the PCL. Looks like Jason Ellison 2.0 to me.

He has a solid LD rate at 20% on the season. He has tailed off since the first half, but he had a first half OPS over .870. Still, nothing to be excited about, and I think its a curious move, but he is probably much better than Jason Ellison.

RedsManRick
08-30-2007, 05:12 PM
Jason Ellison

Age 24 (PCL): .311/.389/.408, 16/19 SB, 196 AB
Age 25 (PCL): .295/.356/.399, 21/34 SB, 461 AB
Age 26 (PCL): .315/.368/.459, 27/39 SB, 505 AB

Buck Coats

Age 24 (PCL): .282/.342/.376, 17/21 SB, 450 AB
Age 25 (PCL): .303/.363/.435, 18/20 SB, 455 AB

Outside of a better percentage stealing bases, I see a pretty comparable player. Maybe there are some difference not shown in the line stats, but a 20% LD that coverts to a .435 SLG in a strong hitters league just don't impress me at all.

I don't think he's any better than Ellison. He's just younger and hasn't had his chance to fail. I don't really care. Everybody needs a 5th OF, AAA journeyman type. I just don't think anybody should expect much beyond organizational soldier.

Freel's liable to be hurt.

Make that outfield Coats, Ellison, and DeWayne Wise and you'd be on to something.

And don't forget Juan Castro would be playing either shortstop or third base too.

His defense has always been suspect in the minors. He doesn't produce enough to justify a spot in the OF.

He could be a potential utility guy, but he'll have plenty of adventures in the field.
