Sarasota has a double header today and its about to get underway. Homer Bailey is scheduled to start the first game. The game is available online to listen to.
http://miraclebaseball.com/ and then click the listen live button on the right side of the page. Fort Myers is one of the only teams with broadcasts of the FSL games, so I try to make habit of listening whenever the Reds play the Miracle.

It'd certainly be nice if Bailey could start exhibiting a bit better command (read: much better command).

Since the Reds called him up in June ...

21 walks in 28.1 big league innings (6.67 BB/9)
8 walks in 8.2 AAA innings (8.31 BB/9)
5 walks in 7.0 A+ innings (6.43 BB/9)

Now the usual disclaimer about a terribly small sample size applies here, but his last 44 innings encompass almost a full two months of pitching for him and he's allowed 34 walks. That's a 6.95 BB/9 over those last 44 innings, and while the bulk of them were in the majors, that's still a horrendous walk rate.

Now we have no idea what's going on, be it an injury issue beyond the groin, mental issues, just lousy control, some sampling of all the above or what ... but whatever it is it certainly doesn't look good at all.

Batter 1 - FB inside, ball 1. Foul ball. FB, grounder up the middle snagged by Justin Turner. 1 out.

Batter 2 - Missed the first pitch. Double down the line. Holden got the ball to second in time, but Turner couldn't make the tag in time.

Batter 3 - FB up, ball. FB leads to a soft fly ball to CF. 2 outs.

Batter 4 - FB swinging strike. FB fly ball out to Josh Holden who makes the catch coming in.

read my first post in this thread.

As for the curveball thing, I counted 17 curveballs in 5 innings. He has thrown 1 change up that the announcer has called. There have been about 5-8 pitches that were not called as anything other than ball, strike, hit, out....

Batter 1 - FB for a single into the outfield.

Batter 2 - Curveball high, ball. Missed that last pitch, but it was a strike. Foul ball. FB gets fouled back. Low and outside, ball. Chopper to first, but foul. FB gets fouled off again. Curveball up, ball. pickoff attempt. FB goes to the wall for a double. Runners at 2nd and 3rd.

Batter 3 - FB low, ball. Announcer says Bailey looks to be tiring. Tie game on a 3 run HR.

And that is the end of the night for Homer Bailey.

I would let him compete in spring training, if he beats out the competition I would let him earn his way onto the team. No sense in jacking him around...no more babying him. I could care less what numbers he puts up in his rehab assignments, they mean very little. He may still get a september call up.

No.

I actually expected Bailey would come back and deal thanks to seven weeks of rest. Theoretically his arm should be fresh. Plus, he's pitching in high A, a level he passed through last season.

This should be easy pickings for him.

Instead he's getting cuffed around. I could look past some control issues if he was gassing hitters, but he's not. He was a big hit away from trouble all night and I'm not taking any comfort that it took until the sixth inning for some complete non-prospect to take him deep.

Something's wrong with Bailey. It could be mental, it could be physical, it could be a bit of both, but he's gone off the rails.

Thank you for somebody else coming to this conclusion. This is not the same Homer Bailey we saw last year. From spring training to now he has looked a step slow. Lets look at the evidence:
1.He isn't hitting 95-97 with the consistancy he did last year. We have heard the scouts whine about this. Sure his comfort zone is 93-94 but he was up around 95-97 much more commonly
2.We had a "observer" say Homer looked like he didn't care during his rehab start
3.We had Homer take a personal leave
4.His command is terrible this year when it should be improving

We don't have any conclusions. Lets state that fact. But we have observations. If his problems are physical, that is very bad. If they are emotional, he hopefully can work through them. I would rather they be emotional for the kids careers sake.

The electricity is gone.
