Probably might be some methane or other substance/material that the meteorite struck in the earth. When they had an earthquake in Central Coast California, it was near some hot springs; methane gas was release into the air.

Let me tell you. I had some funky Waffle House this morning and the methane release is definatley making me sick.

Apparently there was arsenic in the groundwater that vaporized with the impact and that was the cause of the sicknesses.
