Very Lovecraftian.

Probably might be some methane or other substance/material that the meteorite struck in the earth. When they had an earthquake in Central Coast California, it was near some hot springs; methane gas was release into the air.

BTW, my favorite comment from the story:
None of the meteorites that fall in Peru and make perforations of varied sizes are harmful for people, unless they fall on a house
Is the country meteorite central or something?

Apparently there was arsenic in the groundwater that vaporized with the impact and that was the cause of the sicknesses.
