First-year bullpen coach Steve Foster hopes the Marlins consider him for their vacant pitching coach position.

Foster, 41, assumed those duties the final six games when Rick Kranitz told team officials he wasn't prepared to commit for 2008.

"I feel like what I've been created to do is be a pitching coach," Foster said. "If I'm given the opportunity I surely would cherish it, relish it."

At worst, Foster will return next season as the bullpen coach. He has been with the organization since 2005, the first of his two seasons as the low-Class A Greensboro pitching coach. Foster appeared in 59 games during three seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before injuries ended his career.

"I went back and got my teaching degree to give myself this opportunity," said Foster, who earned a degree in 1998 from Wisconsin-Stevens Point. ...

The Marlins set a new single-season club record with 1,504 hits, eclipsing the previous mark of 1,499 in 2005. ...

The Mets' Carlos Delgado suffered a fractured left hand after being hit with a Willis pitch in the first inning.
