On paper a Peavy/Fogg matchup easily favors one side. I mean, really.

YOU JUST CAN'T STOP JOSH FOGG.

KronoRed

Josh Fogg was a closer at UF

That's all I have.

OnBaseMachine

Fogg gets a leadoff groundout followed by a strikeout and then a bloop single to right on a 0-2 count.

OnBaseMachine

Fogg K's Adrian Gonzalez after falling behind on him 3-0.

Rockies coming to bat in the first.

Matsui leads off with a double.

OnBaseMachine
10-01-2007, 07:50 PM
Tulowitzki infield single moves Matsui to 3rd. Khalil Greene made a diving stop to save a run.

Troy Tulowitzki is good. Real good.

Crowd is chanting M-V-P as Matt Holliday steps in. He quickly jumps ahead 2-0 in the count against Peavy. Ball three. Foul ball on 3-0. Ball four. Bases loaded for Helton with no outs!

OnBaseMachine
10-01-2007, 07:54 PM
Helton flies out to the edge of the warning track in CF to score Matsui. Runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out for Atkins.

OnBaseMachine

Atkins RBI single! 2-0 Rockies. 1st and 3rd 1 out for Hawpe.

nothing like a playoff game to determine a wild card winner.

OnBaseMachine
10-01-2007, 07:59 PM
2-0 Rockies after one but it could have been worse. They stranded runners on the corners with only one out.

OnBaseMachine
10-01-2007, 08:07 PM
Fogg allows a one out single but then gets a flyout and groundout to end the inning. 2-0 Rockies after 1 1/2 innings.

Agreed. I'd like it if they always made the top two wild card finishers play one game to determine who gets into the playoffs.

Torrealba homers to left to leadoff the bottom of the 2nd inning! 3-0 Rockies.

Fogg walks Giles. It looks like Fogg is starting to realize that he is Josh Fogg.

OnBaseMachine

Bloop single loads the bases with 0 outs. All this because of Fogg allowing a 0-2 single to the pitcher.

Wow - that was a no doubter by Gonzalaz.

I like these types of games - games which are rather important, but I have absolutely no emotional ties to neither of the teams. This is the kind of game I can sit back and enjoy for a while (before going to work).

OnBaseMachine

Fogg appears to be on his way to single handedly losing this game. He follows the GS by allowing a single and double.

5-3 Padres bottom 3.

M2
10-01-2007, 08:32 PM
You've got to figure that when the coaches went over the gameplan with Fogg, they pointed to Adrian Gonzalez on the video prompter and stressed "Don't let this guy beat you."

So much for planning.

Let's see if Jake Peavy carpes the diem.

Tulowitzki doubles and Holliday singles him in. 5-5 game with 0 outs in the 5th for Todd Helton, who homered earlier in the game. He groundsout to 3B as he almost beat it out.

Man, if somebody had told me Jake Peavy was getting five runs to work with tonight I'd have figured that was game, set, match.

He's only allowed five or more to cross the plate twice all season.

This has already been a wild one and it's only half over.

Man, I love watching Heath Bell pitch. That guy can bring the heat in addition to a knee buckling breaking ball. I was hoping the Reds would acquire him last season when the Mets were dangling him for next to nothing. The Padres picked him up and now he's one of the top ten or so relievers in the game.

OnBaseMachine

It's unfortunate, because this was an epic game until tha moment. Had it been clearly decided based on player performance, it might have gone down as one of the greatest games ever played. But now, it's a black mark on MLB officiating.

Who ever wins I hope it's in 10 innings, seems fitting considering it's a playoff game.

Try 13 innings.

While it turned out okay for the Rockies, this game illuminated Clint Hurdle's shortcomings as a manager. As they have 2 or 3 times during the streak, they won in spite of him:

Josh Fogg pitches like crap, and he doesn't get pinch-hit for after working four full innings. This despite a 40-man roster full of bats and a 13-man bullpen (18 man pitching staff).

Removing Garrett Atkins for Jamey Carroll. Atkins is a better 3rd baseman, and Hurdle is the only person in metro Denver who doesn't realize it. I know it worked out tonight, but you don't remove Atkins' bat in a one-run game

Also, the Rockies are a not a smart baserunning team. Several risks they shouldn't have taken on the bases but did, and several they didn't take on the base, but should have.

What an incredible game. Hairston's dinger in the top of the 13th was one of the most intelligent and gutsy at bats I've ever seen in a big game.

Traditional wisdom would have had him take until Julio threw a strike. He was wild as could be walking Giles. Or even bunt him to second, with no one out.

But he knew Julio had to throw a strike and he was sitting dead red and made him pay big time.

THAT is clutch. Opportunities like that pass by you very fleetingly throughout your career if you're very lucky. To snatch it on such a big stage was incredible.

And I agree, the broadcast was wonderful. What a great switch from what we're used to.

Is driving in a run from 3rd with no outs -- when the runner was probably out in reality -- really "coming through"? A shallow liner to the other team's best throwing OF isn't exactly a great accomplishment.

He's been credited with sac fly and an RBI. An RBI that won the game. From that perspective, he came through. I understand what you are saying though, completely. I was actually shocked that Holliday was sent on that fly ball. Seems like the smart move would have been to hold him and give Hawpe a chance to drive him in with only 1 out.

I think it was the right move to send him, given Giles lack of an arm. Hawpe is clutch of late, but does strike out a lot.

I'm surprised Holliday tried to slide headfirst, instead of putting his shoulder down and knocking Barrett on his boody. Holliday is listed at 235, Barrett is listed at 210. Holliday was a high school all-american football player, who was recruited to play at top colleges.

I believe Holliday would have gotten there quicker, were it not for the friction between the ground and his face.
