Forgive me for perhaps being "asleep at the wheel"... but who does he play for now? I thought it was the Tigers, but he's not listed on their 40-man or depth chart.

Did you try looking up Sean Casey instead? (sorry, had to be done.)

Sean / Shawn... neither one is listed on the Tigers roster... perhaps he is a free agent.

He is a Free Agent. After the 2006 season the Tigers signed him to a one year deal only. Last I heard the Tigers had interest in playing Guillen at firstbase.

Why would we need Casey when we have Hatteberg?

I can easily see Casey back here eventually. Sooner, if they trade Hatteberg. But very possibly in 2009 if he signs a one year deal to DH somewhere.

His contract simply got too large to justify him as a Red a few years ago, but for a reasonable amount, he would be a great lefty off the bench, an amazing influence on the young guys (and specifically someone like JHamilton) and a key PR tool for the club to reconnect with lost fans.

The question is whether he's at that stage in his career to not be a full-timer. I guess he'll know based on offers he gets this winter.

Votto > Casey

If the Reds traded Votto or Hatteberg, I would think it would be a pretty good signing. His power is gone(what there was of it) but he hit .296. I still think he might contribute. Hopefully he finishes his career with the Reds and then goes to work for them. He's probably the best goodwill ambassador the Reds could have.

It looks like the Rangers might have some interest in signing Casey according to MLBtraderumors.com. Of course the Rangers also just traded for Chris Shelton who Casey replaced in Detroit. With moves like this is it any wonder the Rangers stink every year?
