I think it's a little soon for a game thread. We can reopen it before the game starts and discussion can continue in the other thread.

That was my so-called "real prediction". Back in early December I predicted an 82-3 OSU victory.;)

Please OSU, don't let Lester Miles become the worst coach to ever win a NC tonight.

GAC

I won the bowl poll from work this year guys. Only had 5 losses out of all the bowl games. $150. The beer is on me!

GAC

I still say it's gonna come down to our offensive line vs their defensive line. Beanie Wells has to have a solid game for us to win IMO.

MWM

I'll be happy if it's a competitive game. As long as OSU doesn't get beat badly, I won't be too disappointed.

for all the criticism of Les Miles, he's won both bowl games by a blowout.

LSU has the most overrated defense I have ever seen. I remember earlier in the year when CBS was saying they had maybe the best defense in college football history.

Wells is a beast.

MWM

Nice call by Tressel. I'd bet almost anything LSU thought it was going to be a run to the left side (that's what I thought) because they've run mostly to the left this year. Running to the right side probably took them by surprise.

HeatherC1212

That's a nice way to start the game! Get the offense going and most of all, get Beanie loose to run!! GO BUCKS! :jump:

Someone just posted this on another board I visit...is it true?! I know the ref part is true right now, LOL ;)

LSU is getting a lot of help from the refs. The late hit was a bad call and the first LSU touchdown should have been flagged for an illegal formation. There were only two men on the left side of the line, including the pass catcher. It's not surprising nobody covered him -- he was ineligible.

similar to last year ... LSU is doing a bunch of stuff the Bucks have not seen before. It's known as getting outcoached. It's one of th issues with 6 weeks between games, a team could put in a new offense if they wished.

The other issue is Boeckman is by far the inferior QB.

Strange play calling as well. As soon as I saw the alignment on the one play when they were up 7-0 ... I said QB draw. The Bucks are predictable, LSU is not.

Problem is, LSU has a history of disappearing in big games. Its a matter of which LSU showed up. The same one that lost to Kentucky didn't. The one ranked no 1 for most of the season did.

I do agree with OBM, there needs to be a playoff, but it will not happen for about 10 years.

HeatherC1212

OSU won the national title against a very tough Miami team back in 2002 and Tressel's record in bowl games is not bad overall. They need to regroup and settle down and come out raring to go after halftime. They lost some swagger and they have to get that back. I don't feel as bad about this game as I did last year. At this time last year, I was ready to hang up the towel but I'm not ready to do that yet. Go Buckeyes!

BTW, Hartline's brother will probably be UK's QB next year.

It depends on our receivers. If we don't have anyone emerge in spring football, Pulley will be the QB. He's a running QB. If we have some talent at the recievers, then bet on Hartline.

MWM

Hartline is 6'3" and 180 pounds. Robiskie is 6'3" and 196 pounds. By today's standards, they are both quite small.

This game and last year's were all about coaching, nothing more. Tressel can coach in a slower, Big Ten type of game. In games that are played at a faster pace, he's as clueless as anyone. There's a reason why the other Big Ten teams haven't struggled with SEC teams, but OSU has. Tressel's a good coach, but he's never in his life had to coach in these types of games. He was able to be successful in 2002 bcause that defense was flat out awesome, way better than this year's.

I agree. LSU tends to have great 1st halfs. They killed Kentucky in the 1st half, and let us back in the game in the 4 quarter.

OSU can score on LSU, however, they have to be on the field, moving the chains to score.

MWM

He didn't learn anything from last year's shallacking by Florida??

Or is it just not within his capabilities??

They chalked last year's game up to overconfidence and bad preparation. I just don't think he's figured out how to play in this style of game. this type of offense requires different types of defensive sets, and they're not doing anything to confuse this offense. I watched LSU struggle quite a bit on offense this year, but Tressel plays it like he's playing a Big Ten offense. He doesn't know how to scheme against this type of offense. LSU is not this good.

I'll continue to maintain that this result isn't a matter of talent. OSU continues to churn out top round NFL players year after year. They get great talent year in and year out and they've proven they can play with just about anyone. their stuggles in these games are all about scheme.

If OSU had a top notch QB, I would almost suggest going to a no-huddle offense in games like this and then taking the play clock down on each play, just to keep LSU's defensive linemen out there in their stances and see if that takes some of the wind out of their sails.

GAC
01-07-2008, 11:04 PM
I agree with what the one analyst said earlier - LSU's defensive coordinator doesn't believe that OSU has the receivers. So he's able to stack the defensive line and put pressure on OSU's offensive line/QB.

Robiskie, Hartline, and especially Small (where's he been?) have to be more involved, but in a shortened passing game IMO. We gotta shorten the field as far as our passing game goes, and quit trying to go for it all with Boeckman's arm.

Yeah, Boeckman is not cut out for this type of game. I really hope we see Henton in the second half.

And i'd love to see Tressel go out and tell Terrelle Pryor that Boeckman won't be the incumbent and that it's Pryor's to lose.

I've got to believe that Pryor watching this game is the kiss of death for him coming to Columbus.

I can't imagine that the last two national championship games could have coached worse than Jim Tressel coached them. For all the accolades he gets for being a big game coach, I just don't see it. He got extremely lucky in 2002 and has beat Michigan. Other than that, I'm not sure what big games he's coached well in.

The 2005 Texas game was lost almost solely by the coaching staff. Last year, he was completely outcoached by Florida, and he apparently hasn't learned anything in the past 12 months. The offense is predictable, and the defense is playing scared and not agressive like they usually do. The Buckeye performance in these games is all on the coaching, IMO. They're better than this.

I think the Bucks usually do well in big games. I just don't think they do a good job of staying sharp and using that huge layoff between the end of the season and the Championship Game to their advantage.

I think the spreading out of bowl games stinks. I can remember when the last game was usually Jan. 2-3 and, by then, I was usually burnt out on college football anyway. Now they stretch it out so long for the TV money, it's ridiculous. It's not an excuse, because OSU should be able to use that time to their benefit. I'd like to see a playoff, but I fear they'll use it as an excuse to drag the season out longer rather than trying to get it all wrapped up by New Years.

That was one play in the third quarter.

I'm referring to the fact tha OSU had the ball on the Texas 30 yard line with 5 minutes to go and a 5 point lead. when they got there, I said to my brother who I was watching the game with the Tressel was going to go three strait runs up the middle and settle for a long FG. Of course, I was right. Three straight runs for a 3 yard loss. They missed the 50 yard FG and Texas scored a few plays later.

Then, when they had the ball and needed a FG, he went with Justin Zwick instead of Troy Smith. They had that game won, even with the dropped TD pass, but blew it.
