ORG has rumor from Cards board: Rolen to Reds. Thought we might as well put it up for discussion here.

I read the post. It was wild speculation from a first-time poster on a Cardinals message board.

I wanted Rolen back before he was traded to STL but not now.
He is older and with injury problems plus EE can I believe turn into an excellent run producer though I doubt he will ever match Rolen defensively.

Rolen has been a pain in the neck of ever manager he has played for. After a short honeymoon he can't get along with anyone. No, Thanks

EE had a very nice second half of the season. He's not a rookie anymore. No reason it's not all up from here.

Just be patient.

Rolen's won a WS though so that must mean he is better than ever other 3B that hasn't won a WS...

I read the post. It was wild speculation from a first-time poster on a Cardinals message board.

My precise thought process when I first read this two nights ago:

(1) Hmmmm... everybody says we need a right-hand bat. Rolen's a RH bat.

(2) Hmmmm.... Rolen plays 3B. Edwin plays 3B.

(3) Edwin is already one of our few reliable RH bats. Plus, he's cheaper than Rolen.

(4) Therefore, the addition of Rolen adds nothing substantive if it's simultaneously subtracting Edwin.

(5) Unless....

(6) Edwin and Rolen are both willing to pick up a 1B glove and have one (or both, if both end up being serviceable) play over there sometimes.

(7) This creates essentially a "3 players for 2 positions" kind of a deal, which could be absolutely ideal for easing Votto (who I'm not ready to declare an everyday starter just yet) into the line-up while also protecting the fragile Rolen. [Same exact deal as I hope we go with in CF/RF, with Bruce being eased in and Griffey being protected, as Freel/Hopper provide the spells.]

(8) Then, I realized the only way any of this farcical thought exercise made any sense is if St. Louis was willing to do Rolen for Hatteberg, straight up (I'd be too embarassed to even ask for cash to go with Rolen), which St. Louis would never do.

(9) I then cursed the cosmos for making me waste upwards of 90 valuable seconds pondering the bullplop spewed forth by a clueless St. Louis Cardinals' far.

(10) Then I wasted 3 minutes typing this up, and felt even stupider for contributing to the bullplop.

Oh well...
