I do not recognize one of MrCinatit's choices. Not one. Now, sing me half a note of any of them and I'd stand a pretty good chance of getting it. But this is standard for me; I'm a terrible teammate to have on lyrics quiz games. It's odd because I am fond of words, but I do sometimes wonder if I don't listen to lyrics that well as a rule.

Also, I had no idea the Trans-Siberian Orchestra had lyrics. I think I confuse them with Manheim Steamroller, whom I at one time confused with REO Speedwagon. This is all probably very, very wrong.

edit: Ok, I spoke too soon. I can get two of MrCinatit's. But they're really, really easy.

lots of lyrics...and a bunch of poetry or prose (depending on story/album) in between songs if you read the CD booklets.

All of your life you have denied
There'd be a time you would ever die
Still it's been rumored this thing must be

Why is then you that you act surprised
When I appear now to be your guide
Why do you hesitate to follow me

See it rising
Stare and wonder
Hear it beckon you to dance
Feel it hold you
Take you under
I'm your god of second chance

And now you claim that you are not prepared
So much to do you can not be spared
Still your entreaties death will not hear

The graveyard is filled with importnant men
Who could not be spared but were in the end
And so now I whisper in your ear

See it rising
Stare and wonder
Hear it beckon you to dance
Feel it hold you
Take you under
I'm your god of second chance

I have a question.

Do the first lines here represent songs that people thought were good songs? I mean, I think this line "I was a little too tall, coulda used a few pounds." is a pretty good opening line, but the song? Meh.

Secondly, how in the world do you people remember all these first lines? I honestly spent the better part of fifteen minutes trying to come up with one and that's all I got- Bob Seeger, circa 1976.

I can think of songs I like, but the first lines? Nothing.

I dunno, SunDeck. I think you can pick lines for bad and good songs as long as the opening line strikes a chord.

Your Bob Seger reference is perfect, though I'd argue it's a terrific song.

"Kick out the jams, blakety blankers!"

Excellent choice. "Powderfinger" was a nice touch too pedro, might be the best one line scene setting in rock history.

Some others:

Im a street walking cheetah with a heart full of napalm

Is she really going out with him?

No one dared to show for that shower, when nobody turned out to be clean

1989, the number another summer, sound of the funky drummer

You're always dancing down the street with your suede blue eyes

Sunshine, blue sky, please go away, my girl has found another and gone away

You wake up late for school man you don't wanna go

I'm gonna raise a fuss, I'm gonna raise a holler

Hey everybody, look what I found, simply the best manservant in town

There I was completely wasting, out of work and down

Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind

For me, what makes an opening line great is either the lyric itself, or the way it's sung, or it's context within my life, or a combination of all those things.

"Just a small-town girl, livin' in a lonely world"

"Goddam you half-Japanese girls, you do it to me every time"

"Signal got lost through the satellite, got lost in the ride up to the plunge down"

"She's a good girl, loves her mama, loves Jesus, and America too"

"So she woke up, woke up from where she was lying still"

"I guess I shoulda known by the way you parked your car sideways that it wouldn't last"

"Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick, the one that makes me scream, she said"

"Last night, I had a dream that we went to Disneyland, went on all the rides, didn't have to wait in line"

We do not blaspheme the Rufus. True, he didn't write the song. But then neither did John Cale or Jeff Buckley.

I actually can't stand to listen to Jeff Buckley, but I think that's because I dated a guy who worshipped him, in an uncomfortable preening self-conscious dead guy kind of way.

Never you mind M2. I've found that the guy really knows his music, but he likes a very small portion of that which he knows.

I like what I've heard of Buckley, and actually have never heard his version. I prefer Rufus' version to Cale's.

I actually searched for a good clip of Leonard singning it live. All I found was a really weird clip on a European TV show.

I'm no Buckley fan either (he mostly bored me and then he died and became a savant and I was still bored with his stuff), but Wainwright's version of that song is particularly weak. It's basically a straight cover of Cale's version, but he doesn't have the weary baritone to pull it off as well. As far as I'm concerned Wainwright's version sounds every bit like a song sung by a guy singing for a paycheck. Not his best work. Cale took Cohen's original, which was a mess, and forged it into a classic. Then again, Cale's a genius. Buckley used Cale's basic arrangement, but he put a heartbreaking vocal on it. Quite possibly his finest moment on record.

Them's good pickups for someone who's not good with lyrics. Got some Angry Samoans in there too.

For the record, I've got nothing in particular against the Rufus, I just don't like throwaway covers. They're fine if placed right in concert, mostly for that cool, unexpected effect, but I don't see the point in recording a cover that sticks so close to someone else's version.

And here's another attempt at some bizarre triangulation:

Stick it up, mister!
Hear what I say, sir

When I look up to the skies
I see your eyes a funny kind of yellow

I am an antichrist

The Sex Pistols? I got nothing else, though. If you're actually making CONNECTIONS between these groups, I don't stand a chance.

I understand the cover argument. I think the exposure and the paycheck for artists in situations like that can be good, but they run the danger of being known for the covers, which Rufus very nearly did with Across the Universe.

I loooooove Mark Lanegan. He toured with this guy actually
