Going along with the thinking that you don't want to overwork young arms (spare any Dusty remarks).....

What is the max IP, if any limit at all, will the Reds place on Homer this year?

Along with that, what would the answer be for Cueto/Edinson as well...

I'm just wondering if we will need to be on "Homer Shutdown" alert come Sept.

I'm pretty uninformed on the subject so just looking for answers...I'd love to see what the ORG has to say as well.

Homer pitched 103 IP and 139 IP in 2 full years in the minors, and 120 combined between the minors and Cincinnati last year. I would not expect the Reds to increase his IP much beyond 150 IP this year.

I will check and get back to you on Cueto and Edinson.

Generally, the rule for young arms is to not increase their workload by more than 30 innings each season...

I don't think it's the innings as much as the pitches. 110 should be a max per game. Bailey, Cueto, Edison need to be protected, and can't be overworked.

Cueto went from 139 innings to 161 last year, so we can expect him to possibly go to 170-180 IP next year.

Volquez went from 153 IP(combined) in 2006 to 181 Ip last year, so he might go over 200 this year.

Redhawk I am close to agreement with you, maybe 90 AAA/90 MLB for Cueto and maybe 152 for Bailey.

Agreed. Pitch count should be the decider for the younger guys. I do think that the pitch count rule shouldn't be sworn to in regards to the vets. I can't remember the exact games, but I remember Arroyo and Harang both being pulled at the 100 pitch mark when they were clearly under control and were showing no signs of fatigue or lack of focus.

Arroyo's worst 2 starts followed his two highest PC games, both >120. I was at one of them, and it was obvious he had nothing from the get go. The Reds obviously new it as well, since the radar gun on the scoreboard didn't start working till Arroyo was out of the game.

I had not noticed that. Thanks for the insight. I think I remember that game that you are talking about. I remember watching at home thinking that he was done by the end of the first inning. I hadn't realized that it was after one of his longer outings. Nice observation.

I think one of those games Arroyo was even over 130 pitches. Against the Padres maybe?

150 innings should be his cut-off for his season. 110 pitches/ game should be his cut-off as well.

150-160 depending on his development.
