The Game?

Even though they are down by 4, the game has gone the Giants way. They have to be happy. Their front 4 are putting pressure On Brady, which allows them to keep more back for coverage.

I still say the Pats pull this one out, but it has been a solid game. I didn't think the Pats would walk away with this one.

Tom Coughlin and his staff were wonderful tonight. It reminded me of Super Bowl 25 in the sense that a near perfect game plan was needed going in to beat the offensive juggernaut.

Of course you need execution on game day and you have to give it up to Eli and the defense for terrific games.

Also love to see Plex get that catch - 3 years ago he came close to a game changing catch in the AFC Title game, tonight he got it.

I think he went across and shook Coughlin's hand during the time when the officials were trying to get everyone off the field again for that totally random one secone that they insisted on playing at the end of the game. I'm pretty sure they showed them both greeting each other and shaking hands before Belichek left the field.

Up until the last few weeks of this season and the playoffs Eli was a punchline. They won that game with their defense, and some smart plays from Manning. I'm not taking away from Eli, I'm just saying he won't be among the top 10 fantasy quarterbacks drafted next year.

Up until they went on this roll, I'd say Eli Manning was one of the worst starting QB's I've ever seen who was in no danger of losing his job.

Yep. Truth is, most QBs struggle their first few years in the league. The ones that don't have the light come on lose their jobs and the ones that do figure it out move on to good careers. Eli appears headed for the "good career" list IMO. So he's not as good as Peyton, the near-instant star and probable Hall of Famer, but he doesn't have to clear that particular bar to be a good NFL quarterback.

I would say he's turned the corner. Not too many quarterbacks drive a team to a winning touchdown with 2 minutes left in the Super Bowl, trailing to an undefeated team. I would agree that's turning the corner.

As a Giants fan I have been annoyed for four years with the media's treatment of Eli. Whatever happened with San Diego and the draft, the fact is that quarterbacks take time to develop. In the old days, a young quarterback wouldn't even get a chance to play -- at all -- for four years or so.

Anyway, he really showed me something in the playoffs this year. Not only his poise, but a terrific arm. You can't make these kinds of plays unless you can throw.

Amazon.com was offering advance sales of a book written by The Boston Globe sports staff, "19-0: The Historic Championship Season of New England's Unbeatable Patriots," for $14.95.

Also available for presale on Amazon.com was "New York Giants; 2008 Super Bowl Champions," by Sports Publishing Inc., for $10.17.

New England is only 18-0 going into the showdown with the Giants, who are 12-point underdogs.

The books were no longer listed late Tuesday.

The Globe issued a statement Tuesday saying it was "simply preparing for the possibility of a Patriots Super Bowl victory," much like the city of Boston is planning for a possible victory parade.

There was a play near the sideline on the last giants drive where the patriot defender had the ball go right off his hands. That sure would have changed most people's outlook on Eli.

If he's going to lose, Bill Belichick would rather be elsewhere

On more than one occasion this year, Bill Belichick and the Patriots have run up the score on an overmatched opponent, and forced an opposing coach to sit there and watch his beaten team go through the motions while their heineys were being handed to them.

But when the shoe's on the other foot, and Bill Belichick's team has been beaten, he can't sit there and take the pain for a few seconds.

With :02 left on the clock, and his team just having failed on a last chance 4th down effort, Bill Belichick ran onto the field for a quick handshake, and then bolted for the locker room. Belichick's an important guy and everything, but I wasn't aware that the league had given him the authority to decide when games end.

There's time left on the clock, his team's been humbled, outplayed, and lost their chance at history ... and Bill Belichick doesn't have the stomach to sit there and absorb the pain until the clock read 0:00.

That's unsportsmanlike at best, disrespectful at least, and at worst, it makes him a big sissy.

Because Bill Belichick wanted to go hide when he lost, the field ended up being flooded with people, and the officials had to clear the area before the Giants could take their final snap and make it official. When you lose, you take your loss. You don't leave early because it makes you feel sad inside. Your opponent deserves more respect than that.

Anyone remember in 2004 when Randy Moss left the sidelines with 2 seconds left in a Vikings vs. Redskins game? Moss was selfish, a baby, a quitter, didn't respect his teammates, and didn't respect the game. Belichick just did the same thing, but did it on the biggest possible stage, and did it from the position of a leader of men.

Maybe there's something to be said for the inability to lose well ... most great winners don't lose well, and a sore loser is still a loser.

But still, if you're an adult, you finish out the game, and you give your opponents the stage and the respect they deserve.

Three *easy* interceptions that weren't. Horrible lapses on the part of the defenders, but Manning gets credit for "maturing".

Granted, his avoidance of that sack was completely and utterly incredible -- the play of the year, maybe the best play in Super Bowl history -- but the pass still floated, and it took an incredible effort by Steve Smith to make the catch.

Manning's last two throws -- the rollout to Smith, and the TD to Burress -- were excellent. But it took sheer, blind, stupid luck for him to be in the position to win the game.

I'm a Giants fan as well and I don't think he's just average. Quarterbacks are remembered for these kinds of games. Elway, Montana, remembered for great drives in clutch situations. Very few quarterbacks ever turn in championship performances like this.

There is no other corner to turn. This was it.

Whether Eli will put up great numbers for a full career, who knows. But winning an NFL championship -- and directing key drives to do so -- is the most important thing. This playoff run will always be remembered by Giants fan as one of the best in its history.

1) The ball Samuel about got appeared to be a blown route by Tyree.

2) The ball down near the Pats Endzone where Eli threw up a wobbler...it appeared he was jarred abit as he threw it and it would have been a spectacular over the shoulder INT by Gay. No where near an easy INT.

3) The ball Harrison about got was on Eli...but would have been a great INT...Harrison got his paws on it just at the height of his leap.

He's no Joe Montana...but he's not chopped liver either.

I've been telling everyone where I live ever since the teams at the Super Bowl were announced that the Giants were going to win. I had a feeling all year the pats would be perfect until the SB.

The play where Eli barley slipped out of a sack and completed a first down pass. Was classic and will forever be remembered as the play that decided the game.

I'm not a Giants fan at all as NY is not where I'm from, but I had to root for the G-Men here. Being from Indianapolis, there was just no way I could root for the Pats. Amazing Super Bowl. '89 was really good (even though I hated the outcome), but this one is tops. I'll admit I wasn't around for some of the earlier ones so I can't say I witnessed them.

Also, for those harping on Eli, I think it's too early to say. He certainly has not beeb stellar thus far, but week 17 to the present he's been brilliant (and the guy is pretty young all things considered). To play the Pats as well as they did in the regular season, then go to Tampa and win, go to Dallas and win and then the freezing cold in Green Bay and now the Superbowl against the 18-0 Pats?? I'd say he's turned a corner. I know it's the defense and the running game too, but c'mon. The guy has looked great when the games have mattered. I just think at the very least, Eli should get the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise. If he stinks up the place next year and just totally sucks, then that's a different story.

I still say in true Bill Belicheck spirit the Giants should have gone for the endzone again when they got the ball back with :02 remaining. I'm sure if the tables were turned the Patriots would have tried to put another score on the board. Seeing the Giants score again as time expired would have been priceless.

I wouldn't say Eli necessarily deserved it, but the Giants pass rush certainly did. They did a phenomenal job of putting pressure on Brady against one of the best offensive lines in football. Good job, Giants defense.

Fair enough. But wow. That Giants pass rush was amazing. Not only did they put pressure on Brady, but they were often able to get to him on a straight four man rush. Four against five and they just pushed right through one of the best offensive lines in football to get to Brady. Amazing. I would give anything to see something like that for the Bengals. Unfortunately I don't think I ever will under the current regime. I don't think they put that much value in the defensive line.

Great game, great finish.

I have to say, the Giants smacked the Patriots in the chops all game. And it does prove that if you put pressure on Brady, he performs like any other NFL QB.

Having said that, I really honestly thought after the Pats scored with ~3 minutes left, that was the ballgame. Their defense would raise up, Eli would screw up somehow, and the Giants would have a gallant loss.

But Manning proved me wrong and performed in the clutch, he performed a Houdini act escaping from the pass rush and Tyree made a fabulous catch, Samuel dropped a game-ending INT, and that was that.

Great ballgame, lots of fun to watch, and congratulations on a well-deserved and hard-earned victory to the Giants (and the Puffmeister).

On more than one occasion this year, Bill Belichick and the Patriots have run up the score on an overmatched opponent, and forced an opposing coach to sit there and watch his beaten team go through the motions while their heineys were being handed to them.

But when the shoe's on the other foot, and Bill Belichick's team has been beaten, he can't sit there and take the pain for a few seconds.

With :02 left on the clock, and his team just having failed on a last chance 4th down effort, Bill Belichick ran onto the field for a quick handshake, and then bolted for the locker room. Belichick's an important guy and everything, but I wasn't aware that the league had given him the authority to decide when games end.

There's time left on the clock, his team's been humbled, outplayed, and lost their chance at history ... and Bill Belichick doesn't have the stomach to sit there and absorb the pain until the clock read 0:00.

That's unsportsmanlike at best, disrespectful at least, and at worst, it makes him a big sissy.

Because Bill Belichick wanted to go hide when he lost, the field ended up being flooded with people, and the officials had to clear the area before the Giants could take their final snap and make it official. When you lose, you take your loss. You don't leave early because it makes you feel sad inside. Your opponent deserves more respect than that.

Anyone remember in 2004 when Randy Moss left the sidelines with 2 seconds left in a Vikings vs. Redskins game? Moss was selfish, a baby, a quitter, didn't respect his teammates, and didn't respect the game. Belichick just did the same thing, but did it on the biggest possible stage, and did it from the position of a leader of men.

Maybe there's something to be said for the inability to lose well ... most great winners don't lose well, and a sore loser is still a loser.

But still, if you're an adult, you finish out the game, and you give your opponents the stage and the respect they deserve.

One more tidbit from this Super Bowl — you’ll love this. A few minutes after the game ended, I got an email from a public relations firm. The headline was: “Patriots’ loss is win for children and families in need.”

You may ask: How could that be? Well, it turns out that some place called World Visions has received hundreds and hundreds of Patriots T-shirts, hats and stuff and they are sending those to families in need in Nicaragua, Romania and several other countries. This is a very kind thing to do, and I am not in any way shape or form trying to mock this charitable effort. But I have to say, I cannot help but smile thinking that there will be kids in Nicaragua walking around with “World Champion Patriots” T-shirts. It just seems right.

But David Tyree should win the MVP based on that catch alone. Wow! One of the best moments in SB history.

I'm not a football fan at all, but that play, with Manning somehow getting loose and Tyree catching the ball against his frickin helmet (and not losing it when hitting the ground) was absoultley amazing. Definatley a play that will be replayed about 10,000,000,000,000 more times (and deservedly so).

I have a fealing it will be talked about in the same vein as the Flute toss into the pileup in the end-zone to win the NC.

They had the best season ever, which is different than being the best team. Why the Dolphins can't make that distinction is beyond me.

In regards to the Patriots having the best offense ever- you look at that weak schedule they played, and the fourth quarter TDs they scored while being up by a tremendous amount already, and I just want to smack some of these commentators.

Reading the Boston-area newspapers today about how Pats fans are beside themselves in grief is too fun. Boston's 2004 and 2007 World Series wins and the 3 Patriots Super Bowl wins, and now the Celtics march to a championship, is enough. Enough to make someone actually root for New York!

The MVP for the Giants was the defense, so if an individual didn't stand out enough, it should have gone to a group, such as the front 4. Afterall, with less than 3 minutes left in the game, the offense had scored only 10 points.

And while I think Eli deserves some credit, after watching the highlights again, I have to agree with those who have said he had a lot of luck in that drive as well. It wasn't Elway or Montana brilliantly picking apart a defense. He had a couple of balls that could easily have been INTs fall luckily to the ground. And then he pulled a couple of 3rd downs out of his rear. It was a nice drive, but it wasn't brilliant quarterbacking. I say this not to take away from Eli, but more in rejectin the idea that he was the Mvp.

Defensive linemen Harvey Martin and Randy White shared the MVP award in 1978 when Dallas clobbered Denver, 27-10.
That precedent could have been followed this time, with the MVP award being shared by several of New York's linemen.

Actually, I think they should do away with the MVP.... it's a team sport after all, and the Giants clearly showed why last night. No one person can do it all.

Congrats to the Giants. It's the most excited I've been during a SB game in a long, long time. As an ex-New Yorker, way back when, the Giants used to be my favorite team... until the infamous game between them and the Bills. I loved both teams and cried when Buffalo lost, which is when I deemed myself a bigger Bills fan. I don't know, I still don't. Truly, I loved them both.

You know, in spite of this, I still think he's a lousy quarterback. But I am ever so happy for him and the Giants. Luck had to catch up to the Patriots eventually.

While I tend to agree on Eli, I give him a lot of credit on that last, defining drive. But to those who may believe in fate, destiny, or karma, then that 33 yd pass to Tyree, which was nothing short of a last gasp pass of desperation, fits the bill. The guy caught a total of 2 catches all year? He's completely surrounded by Patriot defenders, catches it against his helmet, holds it there, and then pulls it in. Don't know if that was Tyree's hand or God's. ;)

The Giants defense was simply superb. They were the MVP of that game IMHO.
