Mailbag: Hamilton a long-term option?
Beat reporter T.R. Sullivan answers Rangers fans' questions

Is there a chance that general manager Jon Daniels will sign Josh Hamilton to a long-term deal?
-- Josh S., Odessa, Texas

That's definitely something that could come up next winter or in the next few years. The Rangers would like to get something done with Hamilton just like they did with Ian Kinsler. First things first. They need at least one or two seasons to see where Hamilton is physically. This guy does have a history of injuries and that is the single biggest reason why clubs avoid giving certain players a long-term deal.

Why are the Rangers basically giving a roster spot to Ben Broussard and risking losing either Nelson Cruz or Jason Botts? The Rangers can't be serious about cutting one of these younger players loose and keeping Broussard for one year.
-- Beau S., Mansfield, Texas

Broussard is a first baseman, and the possibility is he's keeping the position warm for Chris Davis. But he has been productive at the Major League level and is accomplished defensively. Botts and Cruz are both 27 years old. They are not young prospects anymore. The Rangers' feeling is they have to earn their way on to the team. The days in which a young player is simply given a spot on the roster appear to be over.

Maybe in this case, the grass isn't always greener in Texas? ;)
