Its still 8 days away, weather forecasts that far ahead are about as accurate as me telling you the pick 3.

4-7-1 tomorrow, mid day.

Hopefully there is no rain on opening day.

Exactly. Weather forecasts a week out are about as valuable as the Mexican peso.

About 3-4 days before the game, we should have a much better idea.

It sure ain't gonna come close to last year's OD. We had simply perfect, beautiful weather. You couldn't have asked for better.

Then it changed radically over the next week.

Yeah nothing like that first saturday game versus Pittsburgh. 31 and snowing during parts of the game.

I would would ready for the possibility for it to change in the next few days. Right now one of the main long range weather models has been jumping all over the place for even as close as Friday. One change there and everything else can get thrown off later down the road as a result. The models have shown rain on Monday but 2 days from now it could totally change. Hopefully so.

I was there too. The game was moved up until around noon because of the weather. It was supposed to be a night game. It was April 7, I think. That was a day that I will never forget for a lot of reasons.

Monday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a high near 67. Breezy, with a south wind 8 to 11 mph increasing to between 18 and 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

I thought I had it explained that way to me one time.

No. It means that on 40% of the days with atmospheric conditions (temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, etc.) similar to the day in question, there was rain--at some time during the day. It does not necessarily rain in 40% of the region, nor does it necessarily rain 40% of the time.

Of course, a 40% probability of rain inherently carries with it a 60% chance of no rain! :D

This is the latest from the National Weather Service:

Monday: Scattered showers. Cloudy, with a high near 64. South wind between 7 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

What are "new" rainfall" amounts? Isn't all rain new?

New rainfall is rain that falls during the time frame of the forecast but is only part of the total precipatation of the storm. Ex. Storm starts on Sunday night continues through Monday ending late Monday night. The new rainfall just takes into acount the rain from the day on Monday and not Sunday night. It is just a way of indicating that the storm total may exceed the amount specified for that time slot.

Today: Showers likely, mainly before 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 62. South wind between 10 and 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 4am. Cloudy, with a low around 55. Breezy, with a south wind between 15 and 22 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Periods of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 9am, then a chance of showers, mainly between 10am and noon. High near 62. West wind between 13 and 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service has just changed the forecast again and unfortunately it is the worst forecast yet for today:

Looking at the radar, I'm not really concerned about the game being called. Maybe a delay, but they will get it in. Especially when we are still three hours + from game time.

"New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible."

There's no way a game this significant gets called over a quarter-inch of rain.

membengal
03-31-2008, 11:18 AM
The wider view loop is not encouraging. Main problem is that the line of rain is training from southwest to northeast over downtown and extends back to the southwest a ways. Crossing fingers that the situation improves in the next little bit.

I agree it looks like there a few hours of rain, occasionally heavy, but then a gap for mid to late afternoon. Only way this gets rained out is if the rain fills in behind the current clearing line, the rain slows down, or the Reds need another day to clear that 40th roster spot.

Sounds like there may be a delay. Here is a good rain delay story from John Fay.

I'd guess we won't start at 2:10. It's pouring. But it is supposed to clear up, which reminds of favorite rain delay story. It was in the late 1980s when the Reds would wait out every rain storm to get games in.

The legendary Bill Ford returned from lunch and asked the slot editor, a former Reds employee: "Why are the still trying to get that game in?"

The slot guy: "Bill, they think it's going to stop."

Bill: "It usually does. The record's 40 days."

I worked in TV for 13 years. Our weather guy, who had been with the station for about 40 years once told me any prediction further than three days out was a crapshoot. but he could tell you within the hour when and how long it would rain, and he could do it three days in advance. Because he was required to do a 5 day forecast though, and later a 7 day he once predicted sunshine and 60 degrees at the end of the week. It snowed instead.

I swear this is a true story.

Matt700wlw

I swear this is a true story. That was in a different age as well. Today the major difference is numerical weather modeling calculated through supercomputers in Washington DC. Sometimes the models are right on and other times not but you look for trends in the upper air patterns for the long term forecasts. I remember a instance about 15 years ago where Steve Horstmeyer for Channel 12 said it was going to rain all weekend and we wanted to go camping. We listened and it turned out it was a beautiful weekend and we screwed up big time. But that is 15 years ago and not now. An instance could be seen last week where the upper level pattern kept trending from a more north-south dip to an east-west direction (in non-meteorology terms). A good forecaster will recognize that and take that into consideration for many purposes. Nothing's perfect but hey at least give some computer model technology some credit for better than 3 days with a good forecaster. It sure as hell beats the crap out of hand solving differential equations.
