Agreed. With the Phillies on the hook for all but the minimum on Helms, we could even pay Hatteberg's salary, or a large chunk of it and still come out ahead.

Can he field and throw from third?

Do you mean field and throw well?

Do you mean field and throw well?

Since when is that a prerequisite?

Doubt this would have been noticed here if not by the linkage with Stanton rumor.

Helms would be a great addition off the bench. Get rid of Castro and you have Gonzalez/Keppinger backing up at SS and Helms/Freel able to play 3b and Helms able to play RF/LF and 1b also.

I agree that this is a good step one in making a better fitting bench, but any move to deal Hatte to rectify the redundancy of LH Hitting 1B, leaves the bench with no LH Bats. That means another move to rectify the other redundancy (Freel/Hopper) should be made to add a LH bat. The Reds really have no good internal options for the post Hatte LHPH role unless they go with 3 catchers and use Javy there (I'd rather just keep Hatte).

This team needs to make two moves to fix the lack of utility on the bench. It needs a RH Bat for 1B and Corner OF (could be Helms I suppose) and a LHPH who ideally could play multiple positions including middle IF. Unfortunately Cabrera, Hairston, Rosales, Green, Andy Phillips, etc are all RH Hitters. The best internal options, outside of the 3 catcher scenario, are Drew Anderson and Chris Dickerson and neither inspire confidence as a PH in a key situation. Bruce isn't an option as a PH IMO.

Not to poop on everyones armchair GM for Helms but he has only been DFA'd so the REDS would still need to trade for him now. If they wait until he is waived they will probably need to compete with the other teams ahead of them on the waiver wire.

I don't think that anyone wants to pay him $2.9mill. He'll clear waivers, and sign wherever he pleases for the major league minimum, though it wouldn't shock if the Phillies decided to kick in a lot more money and send him to Cincy for Stanton. Those two teams are being stubborn.
