As has been well documented on my sig, as said on Feburary the 6th by our own Falls City Beer. And I quote...

I'll buy this entire board a round if Cueto EVER hits 96 on the MLB gun at GAB.

Because of school, I didn't see it myself, but it has been confirmed by John Fay and people on redszone that Mr. Cueto hit 96 on the gun multiple times today.

Some of us won't be able to enjoy this round because we are not of age, so I will offer my beer to somebody who is of age.

FCB, are you ready to pay up?

Interesting.

Supposedly last year Homer hit 97+ according to Pitch f/x. If that's the case, then the GABP gun should have shown 99.

I don't know what to believe in terms of velocities anymore, but what I do know is Cueto had a "rather nice" debut. (yes, complete understatement)

Post game stuff from Fay.

Johnny Cueto's debut could not have been much better. He retired the first 15 batters he faced, gave up a home run to Justin Upton, then retired the next six.

The Reds beat the Diamondbbacks 3-2 today, despite a scary eighth. Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect ninth for his first save as a Red.

Cueto went seven innings, allowing the one hit. He struck out 10 and walked none. According to Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first Reds pitcher since 1900 to have 10 strikeouts in the his major league debut. That's as far back as official stats go.

He hit 95, 96 mph on his fastball. His slider was 87, 88, 90. 92. He mixed in an occasional 84, 85 mph changeup. He did not go to a three-ball count. He threw 92 pitches, 68 for strikes.

According to Elias, Cueto is the first pitcher to throw at least five perfect innings in his major league debut since Seattle’s Ken Cloude threw 5 1/3 perfect innings on May 9, 1997, against the White Sox.

It got ugly after Cueto left. David Weathers came on. He got an out, then walked the bases loaded. The Reds brought in Mike Lincoln, who has not pitched in a big league game since May 3, 2004. Lincoln gave up a sac fly to pinch-hitter Alex Romero and struck out Chris Young.

Upton broke up the no-no by leading off the sixth with a line drive home run to left. Cueto got the next three hitters, two by strikeout. He worked a 1-2-3 seventh, as well. He did not strikeout a batter in the inning.

Adam Dunn made nice catches on the only two hard-hit balls before Upton's homer.

The game started in a light drizzle and it picked up.

Cueto had a 1-2-3 first. He struck out Chris Young on a 96 mph fastball, got Chris Burke to pop out to center, then got Orlando Hudson on a grounder.

Ken Griffey Jr. and Brandon Phillips hit back-to-back doubles in the Reds' first. Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion followed with a walks to load the bases. Scott Hatteberg hit a routine grounder right at second baseman Hudson. He booted it, allowing Dunn to score.

Cueto's second: 1-2-3, two more strikeouts.

Jeff Keppinger made it 3-0 with a two-out home run in the second.

Cueto's third: 1-2-3, two more strikeouts.

Cueto got Young to take a 94 mph fastball for strike three to start the fourth. Burke swung through a 89 mph slider. Hudson flied out to left on a nice catch by Dunn

I don't think you can trust anyone's velocities, they're always a little different from different sources. Most stadium guns and the FOX tv gun tend to be notoriously generous.

I could have sworn doug posted some pitch f/x data about Homer with velocities of 97+.

Cueto had the kind of debut we unfairly expected out of Homer last year.

I just hope we don't put the cart before the horse with Cueto and expect his debut outing results every outing.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that this will be Cueto's best outing of the season. On a miserable day to hit, he drew a lineup that will have trouble scoring on most teams even while playing half their games in an environment more hitter friendly than GABP.

After the way the Reds won last night, to have Cueto follow up today with total domination just has to put an extra bounce in your step (I bet the clubhouse was the best place to be in Cincy after the game).

It would be nice if a little momentum could build into a winning record for April.

Just coming back in to make some notes about the above comment.
The pitch F/X had some kinks in it yesterday it would appear. I talked to some people after noticing something real weird with the plotting of the movement on Cueto's pitches and while that problem was figured out (the system was off about 4 inches on the horizontal plane of movement) it was also noted that most guys were throwing 2-3 MPH slower than they have in their past. It could have been the weather, but it certainly could have been the system as well. Time will tell of course, but I think that maybe the pitch f/x was off given some of the speeds I noticed going through the data.

So if Cueto was actually throwing 97 mph fastballs, he was throwing 90 mph change ups?

Yeah, in the pitch f/x data it has him topping out at 84 MPH with his fastball. It is data that likely needs correction, but the problem is there is no exact way to figure out how much correction needs to be made.
