Ummm...why?

The Twins signed former Reds closer Danny Graves to a minor league deal. He is expected to join the Rochester bullpen after getting his arm into shape. Graves, 34, had 33 saves for the Long Island Ducks last season, leading the independent Atlantic League.

Now that Santana's gone, Graves is part of the rebuilding process in Minnesota....

It's just mean to post an April Fool's joke several days later.

I dunno.. Danny Graves had a small stretch where he was somewhat useful to his team

Once upon a time, you're right.

I go back and look at that stretch where the Reds converted him to a starter, then put him back in the bullpen as the ruination of his career. He never was a great closer. He simply didn't have the stuff, but his attitude didn't wear well.

I'd like to forget that era - 2001-2007 - but I can't. I just hope we don't have to add 2008 to that span of dates.

How exactly does one get his arm in shape to throw the gopher ball?

This,

would have been a better alternative. Cheaper too.

Wow. It's a small world.

With not many pitchers in it, apparently.

For me, the big surprise is that Graves is only 34. I guess I never realized how young he was when he was effective.

"He is expected to join the Rochester bullpen after getting his arm into shape."

The rest of his body, however, will report to extended spring training and will likely spend most of the year playing rookie ball.

There was a time when he was automatic in getting the ground ball. If your life depended on getting a ground ball, he'd be your man. Then, he started having messy innings that would fill the bases before he got the ground ball to get out of it. Then, he'd fill the bases and not get out of it. Then, he started having the most atrocious meltdowns.

It's also hard to believe that in the middle of the failed starter experiment, he pitched a four-hit complete game shutout against the Cardinals.
