Raymond Jeffords is off to a great start out of the pen. Last season in Billing he struckout 33 batters in 23.1 innings but also walked 27. So far this year he's thrown 2 scoreless innings with only one walk and five strikeouts. He could be a power arm to watch out of the pen.

I completely forgot about the Chattanooga game. They ended up losing 8-5. Pedro Viola had the worst outing of his pro career.

MIDLAND, Mich. — Every once in awhile, a major-league-type game breaks out in the low minors, and that's what the Dayton Dragons provided Saturday night, April 5, at Dow Diamond against Great Lakes.

Shortstop Todd Frazier hit a home run in the 10th to give the Dragons a 4-3 lead in what would stand up for the final score, but he had to share heroics with a few teammates.

In the ninth, center fielder Justin Reed saved the game with two on and the score tied when, playing shallow, he raced back to the warning track and dove to catch a ball hit by Jovanny Rosario that would have won the game.

Maybe even better than that was the way the game ended. Great Lakes had runners on first and third with one out when Brian Mathews mashed a ball into the hole between short and third. But third baseman Brandon Waring dove to his knees to stop it, made the throw to second baseman Angel Cabrera and Cabrera completed the double play to provide the Dragons with their first victory of the season.

"What a game," Dragons manager Donnie Scott gushed. "That was a major-league game right there. I thought that hit at the end was through, but Brandon made a Buddy Bell-type play and that turn by Cabrera was perfect. It was one of the better games I've been in."

Waring, who knocked in a run (and another scored after an error on the play) with a single in the sixth, saw he didn't have a chance in the 10th of getting the runner at home.

"The ball was hit pretty hard, so we had a chance at two," Waring said.

"That's how we do it," said Frazier, who for the second time in three games was walked three times.

Frazier is one batter the Class A Midwest League will try to pitch around as most of the rest of the Dayton batters try to make contact.

With 14 strikeouts Saturday, they have 40 in three games, on pace for 1,867 for the season, a count that would obliterate their 2004 league-record 1,382.

"We'll get better," Scott promised. "That (eventual) number will go down."

Great. I bet we see him before the end of the year.

That wouldn't be a surprising development. Loads of clubs have the likes of Stone or Colbert on their AAA rosters for filling in for emergencies. Guys like Stone get called up when someone goes on the DL and they need an extra body for a handful of days or a week. It won't be the end of the world.
