I like Straits game, whats he project like position wise. I've only seen him in RF but there is some guy named Bruce slated for there already.

Bruce, Stubbs, and Strait someday?

I really don't want Adam Dunn in the outfield by the time Duran might be ready. Dude already sucks out there in the field, aging 4-5 years would be the worst outfielder of all time. Sign him up, throw him at first base and forget out it. If not, let him walk and hope you make some great draft picks and your pitching is good enough to keep you in things next year.

As do I. The Reds need to start converting some of these failed starters into relievers. IIRC Avery's stuff is better suited for the bullpen anyway.

I still think that Avery coming out of the pen might just be a good ideal.

when drafted, Avery was seen as a bullpen pitcher. I think that the Reds keep such players in rotation longer than most teams do. I think that the hope might be to make them 2 inning+ relievers, eventually resulting in 11 man bullpens.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but...

you've seen the offense this year. Can you imagine how anemic it would be without Dunn? We'd be the Minnesota Twins without Morneau. And that's not a good thing.

I don't know about keeping him around six or seven years from now (which is when Duran could be cracking the bigs) but we need him on this team for the next three or four years, bar none.

Waring wears out Snappers' pitching
Homers twice, drives in five runs in Dragons' 9-2 victory
By Eric Justic / Special to MLB.com

Brandon Waring hadn't homered in six games coming into Wednesday's game against Beloit. For the Dayton Dragons slugger, that's a slump.

Waring broke out in a big way, homering twice and driving in five runs to power the Dragons to a 9-2 romp over the Snappers at Pohlman Field.

After going 1-for-14 in his previous three games, the 22-year-old designated hitter crushed a grand slam in the third inning, singled and scored in the fifth and launched a solo shot in the seventh.

"I didn't have too good of a series coming into today, so I was trying to establish something tonight," Waring said.

Waring is beginning to establish himself as one of the Midwest League's top sluggers. Selected by Cincinnati in the seventh round of the 2007 Draft, he shares the league lead with five homers and 15 RBIs.

Last season, he led the Pioneer League with 20 homers, including a stretch in which he homered twice in three of four games from Aug. 26-29.

"Last year was kind of up and down," Waring said. "It felt really good to have a really good season and take the mentality into this year. It's my first full season, so I just wanted to stay healthy and consistent. I don't let one day's performance affect the next."

With a shot at his first professional three-homer game, Waring struck out in the ninth. He settled for a 3-for-5 night that left his batting average at .373.

"I know what I can do. I know what I've done in the past, so I don't really worry," he said. "You just try to put together quality at-bats."

Denis Phipps fell a double short of the cycle for the Dragons (8-5), collecting three hits and three RBIs.

Dayton's Luis Montano (2-0) won his second straight start, yielding two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and two walks with a strikeout in five innings.

Snappers starter Michael Tarsi (0-3) was charged with eight runs on 11 hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

Jair Fernandez went 3-for-4 for Beloit (5-9).

Until todays game with Griffey and Dunn back to back. The difference is Bruce has shown that ability to hit left handed pitching, so its not that much of an issue. The fact that Bruce plays the OF is more of an issue than the fact that he is a LH batter.

Hitting lefties in the minor leagues is nothing. There are basically no good LH pitchers still toiling around in AAA or in AA. Those guys are making big cash in the majors. Bruce might hit against a hot shot left hander once every two weeks. Other than that he hits against the junk LH's like all minor leaguers do.

I believe Adam Dunn hit over .300 against minor league left handers or somewhere close to that. Just not enough good LOOGY's down there to really compare.

I disagree. If all minor leaguers hit against junk lefties then a lot more guys wouldn't suck against lefties in the minors. Joey Votto has a good plate approach and has shown he can hit in the majors in at least a limited time period and he couldn't hit minor league lefties to save his life.

As for Dunn in the minor leagues, he hit right handers around .300 too. The problem was, once in the majors, pitchers regardless of throwing arm, found weaknesses in his swing. He still hits lefties around the same rate he hits righties in terms of average. So you actually failed to make your point with that example.

I agree with Doug - you can either hit a lefty or you can't. It's all about your swing.
