I may have mentioned this before but Steve Arlin's grandfather broadcast the first MLB game ever on radio back in 1921 for KDKA in Pittsburgh.
The Reds problems at 3b continue. Gags is a good PH but not an everyday 3b. Need to bring up that kid, Driessen, from AAA and give him a shot.

My dad was in the hospital waiting room waiting for his son to be born - dad says he was listening to the game and Johnny Bench got a couple of doubles that night and knew he would turn into a pretty good player.
So by that logic, I should have grown up to be a Bench fan. Instead, I chose to root for the guy who hit a homer in that game.

Why is Phil Gagliano playing so much? Was Dennis Menke hurt?

Maybe it's because Denis Menke just wasn't very good anymore. For the season, he hit only .191 with 3 HR's and 26 RBI's in 241 AB's. He did have a respectable .368 OBP, thanks to 69 BB's, but he managed only a .270 SLG (only 13 extra-base hits) and a .638 OPS. Other than the ability to take a walk (which is less valuable in the #8 spot in the order, except that it turns the lineup over), he contributed next to nothing offensively.

IIRC, the Reds did give George Foster a try at 3rd base in the minors after they picked him up from SF. Obviously it didn't work out.
