At this point I think it is worth a try. Arroyo has given the Reds little opportunity to win. We are 5 back in the division. This team is not good enough to make a big run. We fall back much further and 2008 is just like 2001-20007. It's time for some big changes.

Arroyo: to the pen
Valentin: gone
Castro: gone
Hatty: gone/traded
Weathers: gone/traded
Fogg: gone
Freel: gone/traded
Coffey: gone

I cant see how this would hurt the team any. It could only help or make no difference. Either way it creates space for kids to move up in the minors. Its time to try something.

Good hitting by Valentin and Bacco at the end there. The idiot juicer Gagne on the mound, an ump with a really small strike zone, and both Valentin and Bakko are swinging at ball four, out of the strike zone, load the bases, bring up the winning run, pitches. Then, to add insult to injury, Bacco takes a cripple down the middle for strike three. I am really growing to dislike this team. Its time for someone other than Edison Volquez and Joey Votto to step up. Starting tomorrow Aaron.

People are acting like they expect Bako to do something other than strikeout in meaningful AB's. The guy isn't here for his bat. Anything he gives you above .230 is icing on the cake. Just because he's hit .360 so far, doesn't mean he's turned the corner or figured it out. He's a long time veteran with a piss poor bat and above average defensive skills.

As far as Arroyo to the pen - give me a break.

Agree that Fogg and Castro need to be out of here ASAP. Both of them are more than expendable.

Hatteberg's trade value is awfully low right now.

We may just need to cut our losses and get rid of Coffey. It's apparent that a stint in the minors won't do him any good, as it hasn't in the past. Too bad, he's got good stuff and a good mindset. Poor execution.

Valentin stays.
Bako should be cut when Ross is ready.

Freel OR Hopper. Pick one. Trade the other (or demote Hopper)

Get Cabrera or Phillips up here ASAP. Hairston will not be successful, as he hasn't been since he was on the juice. Plus, it gives Cincy a bad rep to have an HGH guy here. I say cut Hairston or murder him. Preferably the latter.

I am still perplexed as to why Castro is on this team.
We CANNOT afford to use a roster spot on a defensive specialist.
When are defensive specialists used? When we're up in the 8th and 9th innings. How often are we up late? Not that often? That's what I thought - meaning Castro is useless. Besides - our defense isn't nearly as bad as it was when Castro was brought in back in 06.

Last, but not least, time to end the Corey Patterson experiment. If we could ship him to a team that has a proven leadoff hitter, but needs a LH bat and CF, we could find a spot for Patterson. We need a leadoff hitter playing CF on this team. .270 OBP will not cut it. Patterson would be an ideal 7 hitter. Maybe the Twins could use him.

Had Votto gotten in the game yet? If he hadn't........I kept thinking Dusty should have moved Valentin to catcher after his pinch at-bat........and then had Votto pinch hit for Bako.

I'll go look at the box score and think about what is wrong with my thinking.

First off, it's Bako, not Bacco...

Arroyo to the pen - no shot.

Agree with Fogg gone. Trade freel / hopper - you're gonna have to make a move sooner or later. I'd like to see Patterson gone, but he's Dusty's boy (black and he's already played for him), so that move will be hard.

Get rid of Dunn, Griffey, Fogg, Weathers, Coffey, Arroyo, Griffey, Dunn, Edwin, Hatte, Valentin, Patterson, Freel.... who else?

What??? What does being black have to do with it? Instead of worrying how to spell Bako, maybe you should work on making ignorant remarks!

Arroyo: to the pen

Arroyo was involved in 24 Reds wins last year. Isn't that around 1/3 of the Reds wins?

SarasotaFan is referring to Baker's own comments about how African Americans were better suited to play baseball on hot sunny days because their ancestors got used to the conditions during slavery.

However Baker never said he preferred black players over white players, but some people can infer that

Rehabbed Belisle to start on Monday
Righty to take Fogg's rotation spot after strong stint in Triple-A
By Stephen Ellsesser / Special to MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- Matt Belisle is back in the bigs.

Having gone 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA in three rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville, Belisle will start in place of Josh Fogg on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced Saturday.

Belisle has been on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. Fogg has struggled to start the season, posting a 1-2 record and a 13.50 ERA in three starts. Lasting just two innings, Fogg allowed nine runs on seven hits in his last start, a 12-3 loss to the Cubs.

A corresponding roster move would be announced soon, the team said.

Hopefully that corresponding Roster move will be releasing Josh Fogg...

Why release him? Move him to the pen for long relief stints. We still want to keep close tabs on Volquez's and Cueto's pitch counts. So a lefty & righty long relief tandem of Fogg & Affeldt would help ease the two young bucks into the bigs.

I seriously don't know why everyone is getting so upset about our current struggles. Did any of you seriously expect us to win this year?!? All I was looking for was improvement and opportunities for the young kids to get some experience under their belts. 2009 and 2010 are the years when we'll SERIOUSLY compete (and after). By then, Junior will have moved on, Weathers will have retired, Merker will be gone, Castro will be gone, Freel will be gone, Gonzo will be gone (hopefully), and Hatteberg will be gone.

All I'm wanting for this year is to see steady improvement from our core players for the future. Votto, Volquez, Cueto, Phillips, Edwin (longshot it seems), Keppinger, Belisle, Burton, and hopefully soon we'll be seeing Bruce, Bailey, Roenicke, Frazier, Stubbs, Warring, and numerous others. They need to be given a chance while we HAVE no chance as a team. And that's now. Holding back the youngsters in a futile hope for a playoff run this year is stupid. The signings of Fogg and Affeldt were not attempts to have them lead us to the promise land, it was to buy us time to work in our kids. Anybody expecting Fogg or Affeldt to be extremely successful was simply deluding themselves. Everything we do NOW should be aimed towards the FUTURE.

All the article mentioned was that a corresponding roster move would be made, and that Belisle will be starting Monday. We can all wait to see what the roster move is.

I'm not looking at what he did last year. The past is the past. We have to look at how he is doing now. I have not be impressed this year with him and I think Bailey would do better in his place.

I tell you what. Give him two more starts. If he struggles (like putting on the first 3 batters on he faces) then at least consider that there may need to be a change.

I am still perplexed as to why Castro is on this team...........

Like Catcher and and Centerfield, Shortstop takes a specific skills set; and, they have to have a back up shortstop in case of injury during a game plus to allow the regular a day off every couple of weeks (especially like in a run like this run of 16 straight days the Reds are now in the middle of). Dusty says B.Phillips is anchored at 2nd base and will not play any shortstop. With the current roster that makes Castro the back up shortstop.

Jerry Hairston Jr apparently is playing some at short in Louisville. They could be looking at him to be the fill in as the back up at short on a day to day basis figuring that if Keppinger would go down for an extended period, they could get Janish up over nite. Other than this possibility or a trade, Castro is likely around until Gonzo comes back which is looking like June at the earliest.

When one looks at the roster, the bench seems to be comprised of left over and misfitted pieces. They did not make some hard decisions on trades or letting folks go at spring training and now it is coming back to haunt them. I couldn't believe at the time that of the group of Jolbert Cabrera, A.Phillips, A.Green, and Hairston Jr that at least one did not make the club out of spring camp. Not that it necessarily would have been a better roster; but I think at the time they thought both David Ross and Alex Gonzalez both would be back by this point in time; and perhaps the roster was shaped around the idea of the easiest moves from that perspective.
