Interesting that the Braves would bring in Niekro in relief in the 7th inning. Also Sparky got the ole heave ho after Hall walked the first two hiiters in the 8th.

It was not uncommon prior to the late 70's/early 80's for starting pitchers to occasionally make relief appearances on their "throwing day" between starts--especially if the pitcher in question was a knuckleballer like Phil Niekro.

Niekro made 30 starts and 12 relief appearances in 1973, compiling a 13-10 record with a 3.31 ERA. In 245 innings, he allowed 214 hits while striking out 131 and walking 89. He pitched 9 complete games (including 1 shutout), and also recorded 4 saves.

Handling pitchers then was quite different. Sparky would give an occaisional start to Clay Carroll. Niekro could probably pitch nearly everyday throwing that knuckler. IIRC, Wilbur Wood started both ends of a doubleheader for the White Sox sometime in the 70's.
