Herrera promoted

Chattanooga reliever Danny Herrera was promoted to Triple-A Louisville after picking up Wednesday’s victory. In 10 appearances with the Lookouts, Herrera is 3-0 with a 2.55 ERA.

Joining the Lookouts today will be reliever Lee Tabor, who is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in six appearances at high Single-A Sarasota.

Yep, I think both those moves happen at the same time. And I'm hoping it's not for at least another month.

I'd also like to see Josh Roenicke promoted to Louisville very soon.

I just can't get past his size. Does he really only weigh 145 lbs? I'm picturing a jockey from Keeneland throwing a baseball.

Is he throwing a lot of groundballs in AA?

Yes he was.

agreed. But, as a throw in on the Hamilton deal, I wasn't expecting much. Still he may be worth a look. Especially if he keeps up those groundball numbers.

Four of the five earned runs the guy (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Danny%20Herrera&pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=502609) gave up were in one appearance (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&gid=2008_04_15_cngaax_hunaax_1&cid=498&t=g_box).

Without that he's got 1 ER in 16.2 IP. One thing I did notice is that his strikeout rate is down a tad from last year- in the Texas League he whiffed 64 in 52.1 IP. He's only got 10 in 17.2 in the Southern. His groundball rate is down some too, although batters are hitting just .211 overall.

Good for Herrera. Hopefully Roenicke will joining him in AAA shortly.

How are they using him? One inning guy? LOOGY? I would think a screwball guy would not be a LOOGY. Can he go multiple innings?

The Padres seem to think a gimmick-pitch reliever is worth a spot on the 25 man roster.

They are stashing him. But they think he's worth keeping. BTW, Browning threw the same trick pitch.

Herrera's pitch can best be described as Bugs Bunny slow with crazy downward movement. I saw him pitch in college on FSN. He was dominate pitching at speeds of 59-82.

Herrera could be the nasty "mess the opponent up" guy. A LH, double soft tosser with an uncommon pitch coming in before and after some hard throwers might just work and give the next guy a little advantage as well.

Are you describing a starter or a reliever? It seems like they're projecting him as a reliever, maybe an innings eater. We could sure use a LH Scott Sullivan.

However I am a believer that our starting rotation lacks a LH junkballer. I think with all our power arms we'd be well served to get a Jamie Moyer, Tom Browning, Randy Wolf, Bob Knepper type in there. I'd love to see Maloney or Livingston pull it together and grow into that role.

He's a Rule V pick. Burton had at least one trip to the DL last year. Hamilton too. good way to season a guy a little bit at AAA, then ease him into low pressure situations. The Padres like him, and I think they have a good eye for pitching over there.

As a reliever. Say after Volquez, Cueto or Bailey and ahead of Roenicke, Burton or Cordero.

I don't think he'd do well multiple times through a line-up.

Danny Ray's my man. Nice extra piece in a trade. See also Darrel Thompson and, from the looks of things early in AA, Shaun Cumberland. Lotta credit to Krivsky and his scouts on what were generally dismissed/ignored aspects of 3 deals.

Wayne Krivsky always maintained that Daryl Thompson wasn't just some 'extra piece' in The Trade. I think the Reds knew what they were getting and that the Nationals didn't really know what they (well, Bowden, anyway) were letting go.

Faith? Maybe not. But I sure hope he gets a chance to fail. I don't want to see him strung along like Guevara was.
