I was thinking this morning how nice it would be if there was a website that had P/PA stats for minor leaguers. Since there's not, I'm come with another idea. So I went back and looked at the all the Gameday boxscores and watched each of Bruce's atbats and wrote down how many pitches he saw in each atbat. Here is what I come up with starting on Opening Day up until yesterday's game.

3, 2, 4, 4 = 13
4, 3, 3, 3, 6, 6 = 25
5, 3, 5, 4 = 17
1, 3, 2, 3, 6 = 15
6, 2, 6, 2 = 16
3, 3, 3, 6, 5, 3 = 23
4, 5, 3, 4, 2 = 18
3, 4, 5, 1 = 13
3, 4, 3, 5 = 15
4, 3, 1 = 8
2, 4, 6 = 12
7, 3, 3, 4 = 17
2, 3, 3 = 8
5, 2, 4, 3 = 14
2, 2, 1, 4, 2 = 11
5, 6, 3, 5, 6 = 25
2, 2, 5, 3 = 12
3, 3, 5, 7, 7 = 25
6, 6, 3, 5 = 20

307 pitches seen in 83 plate appearances.

That is 3.70 P/PA. That is pretty darn good and it proves that he works the count deep. Just another reason why he's going to be an elite hitter in my book.

FWIW, here are the career totals for some major league players:

Adam Dunn: 4.23 P/PA
Ken Griffey Jr.: 3.71 P/PA
Alex Rodriguez: 3.93 P/PA
Chipper Jones: 3.67 P/PA
Larry Walker: 3.47 P/PA
Barry Bonds: 3.45 P/PA
Albert Pujols: 3.82 P/PA

I'm surprised Bonds' isn't higher than that

Thats just 4 at bats in which he put the first pitch into play this year. Not bad.

Good stuff OBM.

Sounds like Jay Bruce can cognitive-swivel with the best of 'em.

I wonder what Bonds' is since people decided to stop pitching to him 10 years ago. I'd bet it's over 4 but I'm probably wrong.

Either way it just goes to show that Bruce isn't a Gurerro type free swinger and that he should be up here now playing CF.

Another tidbit

over his last 8 games Bruce is 11-for-26 (.423) to raise his BA 44 points

Here are Bonds P/PA since 2001 when he hit 73 homers.

2001 - 3.84
2002 - 3.54
2003 - 3.97
2004 - 3.93
2005 - 4.12
2006 - 3.99
2007 - 3.97

I once spent about an hour doing a study on what it would be like if the Reds could have a lineup of hitters who specialized in getting as many pitches per plate appearance as possible. The conclusion I drew (and granted, this was after several beers) was that it would have almost no effect over a three-game series. However, it would greatly hurt the opposing team for its series in the near future and would, therefore, help the other 14 teams in the league help defeat the team the Reds just faced. In a seven-game series, though, it could potentially be very beneficial.

How so ?? The only guy you want to work the count on is the starting pitcher - especially if he's on that day. Hitters want to get his pitch count high and quick, so that he'll be out of the game. As for relievers, their pitch count doesn't matter cause they can turn over and throw the next day or just bring in 1 of the other 6 from the bullpen.

I have a Jay Bruce question. This looks like a good place to post it. I was at the Bats game on Wednesday afternoon in Indy. Jay Bruce was playing leftfield. What is up with that? It was the first time that I saw him play. Everything that I have read says he is our future centerfielder or rightfielder or is Dunn gone after this year?

Sweet was quoted as saying that Bruce would be playing all the outfield positions from time to time. Just prepping him for any OF role if he's called up.

Yes he has been.

Does anyone have his fielding stats? I have a feeling that they are good.

Here's an update of his last four games added on to what I figured up a few days ago:

5, 6, 8, 5 = 24
7, 5, 2, 4, 6, 4 = 28
6, 5, 2, 6, 1 = 20
2 = 2

74 pitches in 16 plate appearances.

381 pitches overall in 99 PA's.

3.85 P/PA

Updated through 4/28/08.
