Any Derby picks out there?

Big Brown's the favorite at 3-1 but got stuck in Post 20. Colonel John is the second favorite at 4-1 and is at Post 10. Pyro is in Post 9 and the third favorite at 6-1. Pyro's trainers are blaming the polytrack surface as the reason he fared poorly in his last race.

I do like Smooth Air (15-1 odds) as an underdog to land in the money.

My general rule is to go with 5-1 odds, or the next closest. I guess that means I'm going with Colonel John.

Two quick early small money bets just to get things started ...

I'm boxing an exacta with Pyro and Colonel John and I'm also taking Smooth Air across the board as an underdog bet. The payout for either bet winning shouldn't be too bad, and I'm betting against Big Brown given his post 20 start and possibly sloppy conditions during the race.

Pyro and Visionare (sp?) will be my boxed exacta.

Big Brown's too far on the outside, and will either end up wide into the 1st turn, or try to fight towards the rail before turn 1 and will get boxed. I just don't like his chances.

I'm picking the lady...8 belles. Big Brown is way to far outside, he's almost starting in Indiana. My trifecta is 8 belles, Pyro, and Colonel John.

My only Kentucky Derby story:

2003 I had a $2 superfecta box, my horses with about 200 yards to go were sitting 1,2,3,4...."oh my God..what's that horse on the outside...no, no, no....Funny Side wins the Derby. My horses finish 2,3,4,5. I would of won like 3 grand...."let's get out of here."

Post time anyone?

I did 4 exactas this year. Took Big Brown, Pyro and Col. John in one. Did some long shots mixed in the other 3. The field seems kind of weak this year.

I'm picking Smooth Air, simply because I don't want to pick the favorite. I like Denis of Cork too.

Lil TeamGriffey picks Big Truck because every boy would. :)

I just returned from wagering on the Derby at river downs. I have Gayego across the board and Gayego,Z Fortune, and Pyro in an exacta box. I told my wife I should have tri boxed the six horses I threw out when handicapping.:D

Big Brown was the winner but the filly, Eight Belles, broke both front ankles in the stretch and had to be put down.

I feel so bad for Eightbelles, her jockey, her trainer, and her owner. Even though I didn't pick her, I was rooting for her big time because she was the only filly.

She must have stumbled or something because she was well beyond the finish line all by herself when it happened.

So sad.

I didn't see it or listen to it because I was sleeping when they ran the race, so right here is the first I heard of this. That is just so sad. I don't know what else to say.

Sad story about Eight Belles. I thought it was very decent that they used the veterinary ambulances to shield the public's view where normal sports broadcast MO is to replay the incident ad nauseum.

Congratulations to Big Brown, his owner, trainers and jockey. Did anyone else notice the camera angles on the jockey's wife? I think we almost had a wardrobe malfunction. Then, when they went back to the family a little later, the camera really focused on her "assets," at which point I think Tom Hammond mentioned implants. If you hadn't seen the human interest bio on the jockey before the race, you might not have known he was talking about cochlear implants.

I still can't believe Big Brown won from the 20.

I never thought I would tear up after a horse race, but I did after this one. She ran the race of her life and went out like a champion. Very very sad. My 9 year old daughter cried for 30 minutes.

Didn't you just know PETA would get involved in this? They now want Eight Belles' jockey suspended.

PETA......what a joke. People who know absolutely nothing about something should keep their noses out of it. What happened to Eight Belles was very sad and horrific, but I promise a horse of that caliber was treated like a queen during her few years of life.

Does anyone here live in or around Lexington. I have some friends down there and they invited me down this past weekend to tailgate at Keeneland. I was just dumbfounded when I got there. Couldn't believe the number of people who were there, even without live racing. People waiting in line for 45 minutes for the drive-thru betting windows. Keeneland is just a beautiful place, will definitely make it a yearly trip for the Derby, nothing like a day-long tailgate for a sporting event.

Why not enjoy two days of tailgating and hit the Oaks Derby weekend in Louisville? truly a great two days of sport/drinking/scenery/tradition/etc...........
