I have been doing some reseach for a friend....long story...anyway, when looking at the Reds of 1975 stats, Clay Carroll's numbers are really good. ERA in the mid 2's. For some reason he was traded for a pitcher (Rich Hinton) who never had any real success..majors or minors. Also, included was a minor league catcher (Jeff Sovern). I can't find any stats on Mr. Sovern, but it doesn't appear he had any success either.

Why would a team trade a player like Carroll for next to nothing? Anybody got any info?

He was involved with an agent that the owners, especially the tight-fisted Reds ownership group didn't like. The name of the agent escapes me at the moment, but he was similar to Scott Boras of these days. This agent was also the reason that Tony Perez and many others were traded.

I think the agent was Jerry Kapstein.
By the time of the trade, Carroll probably ranked behind Eastwick and Borbon, and perhaps McEnaney, in the Reds bullpen.
