Have any of you ever heard of Junior Brown?

Not bad for a country singer.

Something a little different for me: Hotdoggin' by Playdough, a Dallas-based rapper. My favorite track is 'ya know' which is done over a reworked (sorry, I don't know real rap terms) Black Keys sample. Not usually my kind of music, but for some reason I like listening to it.

Thee Oh Sees - Castlemania. A couple listens in I'm rather disappointed. They added Lars Finberg of The Intelligence as a multi-instrumentalist, and he seems to have robbed them of a bit of their delightful mania.

Bummer.

I've been very disappointed by this record.

Not at all what I was expecting, but I'm enjoying it. Interesting flow to say the least, hard to tell where one track ends and another begins at times.

Favorite current band. Love. Love. Love.

Big Beach House fan myself. The instrumentation alone doesn't do much, but I'd pay money to hear Victoria Legrand read from the telephone book.

Still listening to Thee Oh Sees new album, Castlemania, which has grown on me. For any fellow Chicagoans, they're playing town twice this weekend, Empty Bottle on Saturday and a free show at the Logan Square Monument on Sunday.

I've also started digging through Ty Segall's catalog, really enjoying him so far.

I've not yet been struck by anything Thee Oh Sees have done, but the EP by their frontman (?), Tim Cohen's Magic Trick, is one of my favorite things that's come out this year. Very cheeky and intelligent and kind of basic in a good way.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you're confusing The Fresh & Onlys with Thee Oh Sees. Both Bay Area scrappers, but, to my mind, different sounds. Recommended entry point for Thee Oh Sees, Help.

Good seeing you around VP. Always enjoy your literary and musical opinions.

Yes, you are totally correct! The Fresh & Onlys and Thee Oh Sees are two bands that I've been lukewarm on, hence the mix up :) But I will check out Help.
