Any idea who was the last Red to hit 3 in a game? Was it Russell Branyon?

So is this a player who's development was slowed by being in the minors too long? or is this a result of his time spent in the minors?

From CTrent's blog:

Pretty good day for Joey Votto, his third homer. He's the 23rd Reds to hit three homers in a game, the last was Aaron Boone on May 8, 2003 against St. Louis

And it's only the 6th inning!

It's sad that some of the Reds biggest producers are just up from the minors or a season or so removed. (Keppinger, Volquez, Votto, etc.)

Aaron Boone maybe? I was at a game he hit 3, but I don't know if he was the LAST to do it.

It's nice, but it's typical Reds baseball. They hit the majority of their home runs in blow outs like this. Either that, or they get a cheap meaningless one when they are being blown out. I'd like to see a few more of these in clutch situations and close games.

I remember going to a game and watching Reggie Sanders hit 3 homeruns in a game, it was him or Ron Gant I forget as I was about 10-12 years old.

Votto just grounded out in his last at-bat. He sucks. ;)

Dunn who?

Hopefully that cements Votto into the #4 spot and leaves Dunn in the #6 spot.

He would have had more RBI's,too, if Patterson didn't have a job because of Dusty's manlove for him.

Bruce should be the #3 hitter.

Uhh, Votto was hitting in the 5 hole... He did not homer in the 4 hole. Maybe he should hit 4 with Dunn 5, Jr has always hit best with the Dunner behind him. Same thing for Phillips.

Anyone seen the clip of ESPN News talking with Votto on the front page of espn.com? That is one of the funniest things I have ever heard in my life. Have to see it.

Bruce should be the #3 hitter.

He should but he wont for a while. As long as Patterson is here then Bruce won't be until September if I had to guess. And when Bruce gets called up he shouldn't be starting out as the #3 hitter. Votto had to earn his way up the lineup and so does Bruce.

Hi all,
I was at the game today and I am still in a sense of daze from the insanity of longballs. Votto was outstanding!!!

You sure did pick a great game to go to. Votto is showing that he is something else.

Anyone know if a rookie's ever hit 3 home runs in a game before?

According to homerderby.com there have been a few that have done it in their rookie season including Mark McGwire. But it hasn't been done since Jonny Gomes did it in 2005.

I went to the game today, and I'd have to say Votto made my day. :)

For once my trekking down to the 'Nati paid off...what a great game to see in person...even the rain couldnt dampen the spirits...Votto's 3 taters and Volquez dealin'...unfortunately I still get the feeling this will be one of the few highlights of a disappointing season...
