ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals put struggling closer Jason Isringhausen, who has an 8.00 ERA and six blown saves, on the 15-day disabled list on Friday because of a cut on his pitching hand.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported last weekend that Isringhausen hurt his right hand striking a television set in frustration in manager Tony La Russa's office.

Isringhausen was 32-for-34 in save opportunities last year, a season after he missed the team's World Series run because of hip surgery.

Isringhausen and La Russa have said repeatedly that the pitcher's problems are not physical.

The team purchased the contract of rookie right-hander Chris Perez, the closer at Triple-A Memphis, and transferred right-handed reliever Josh Kinney from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. Kinney is recovering from elbow surgery.

The 22-year-old Perez is 1-1 with eight saves and a 2.04 ERA in 18 games in the minors, with 22 strikeouts and nine walks in 17 2-3 innings.

People that do that kind of thing crack me up. My brother got angry the other day and punched his laptop screen...broke it, now he's out 3 or 4 hundred bucks. Fat lot of good it does to punch inanimate objects in anger.

Julian Tavares broke his hand a few years ago and kept playing...

It was reported yesterday Isringhausen would be placed on the DL with a phantom injury.

Sometimes you just have to show those machines who's boss. Unfortunately, it often turns out to be the machine.

Maybe Jason was angry because Dwight slept with Angela.

Hmmmm. No.

I DO remember someone breaking his hand punching the floor after Sonny beat him at Sega.

Didn't he pull a similar stunt earlier in his areer with the Mets while he was rehabbing an injury?

I hope he isn't getting paid while on the DL. But he probably is.

He definitely belongs on the "suspected of being a moron" list.

noooooo. I was playing the computer at NCAA football and was winning 72-0 and he scored with no time left and it ticked me off.... So I punched the floor and caught a joist. They don't give very much.

Did he laugh at you?

I'd struggle not to feel a little tiny bit of joy if that happened to my brother--if I had one--after he handed me a shellacking like that at a video game.

Nerp. I scored on the last play to WIN it. Then you punched the floor (not hitting a joist) and your frail hand was subsequently crushed by the 3/8 inch subflooring.

Thats how I remember it.

If you were alone, how could you have ramped the score up on me?

He absolutely will be paid while on the DL. Same with Jeff Kent and the motorcycles ("washing my truck"), David Wells and the bar fights, Clint Barmes and the "carrying deer meat."

If a team doesn't want to pay a player, they can cut him and hope the player doesn't win his grievance. The Cards don't want to cut Izzy, so they have to pay him. Haven't checked the CBA lately, but IIRC clubs and the league are very limited in their capacity to fine a player or otherwise dock pay without triggering players' rights to grievance arbitration.
