What to do in Dayton

I am going to a conference in Dayton in a couple of weeks and was wondering what people recommend doing there other than Dragons games. From the agenda, it looks like we are tied up during the day but does anyone have any favorite restaurants etc in the area of the University, downtown, etc?

Highly recommend the Pine Club, but bring cash. They don't take plastic.

Dayton is not a tourist town, and with UD out for the summer, there won't be going on around campus. Other than the Dragons your options are pretty much chain restaurants, malls, and movie theaters. If you head south a bit you can smell Moraine...

- USAF Museum is world-class and highly recommended.
- Schuster Center has some good musicals and orchestra.
- 2nd Street Market is nice place to while away a little time.
- Canal Street Tavern is a good place to tip a few brews and hear some good tunes.
- My knowledge of UD bars is 25 years stale. Is The Shed still down there?

For the most part, Dayton isn't really a "Touristy" place. There is quite a bit you can do if you live here and want to explore a bit, but nothing that really sticks out as a "must do".

I'd go the the Air Force Museum (http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/) if you have any interest in that at all. You can kill 2-3 hours there real easy and it's pretty sweet. I have been there a couple of times and enjoyed it each time.

Dayton Art Institute (http://www.daytonartinstitute.org/) has some pretty good exhibits from time to time, have to check when you are in town.

For Beers, I like the Dublin Pub (http://www.dubpub.com/index2.htm).

You might want to check on ActiveDayton.com (http://http://www.activedayton.com/dayton/content/index/things-to-do/) to see what events might be going on the weekend you are here.

Most people just get drunk and head back to their hotels when they are in Dayton. :)

x2 on OLD Hickory and the Pine Club. Dublin Pub is a good place in the Oregon District. Other than that, dodging bullets on Gettysburg Ave. is fun. :thumbup:

Air Force museum is free too, which no one has mentioned. Also make sure to check out the presidential hanger if that's still open to the public (pretty sure it is). They have old presidential aircraft in a couple large hangers and some other cool/interesting aircraft. It's actually on the base (not with the rest of the museum), so you might need to call ahead of time to see if you can even see it or what that might involve.

Canal Street Tavern usually has good music and is right across the street from the Dragons stadium as already mentioned.

Dayton Mall and the Greene are both short drives away from downtown (10~15 mins) if you are into doing the shopping thing.

Nice gals can be found anywhere. You may have to look harder in some places though.

Interesting. They may have changed the name to keep from getting the 2 locations confused or I'm just stupid:D. The other one is in Riverside and is NOWHERE near as good as Brown St.

I don't know how many of you care, but I just heard that the Nite Owl closed. I didn't go up to Dayton too often, but that was one of the places I enjoyed going to.

The Shed was purchased and remodeled by Greg Gels, UD alum and former UD football player, circa 1995 or so. The bar became known as The Fieldhouse, and it's the big night spot for UD students. And yes, they did get rid of the famous Shed couches.

A lot has changed on Brown Street over the last 5 years. They've torn down a ton of old buildings, and they now have Chipotle, Panera Bread, and other small shops where things like Submarine Alley, Arby's, and Submarine House used to be.

I remember the Shed had a stuffed sleeping dog lying by the fireplace. Many a drunk would go over the dog and pet it and say "good doggie".

I worked at the Red Barn Chicken next door to the Shed circa 1972 (yes, I'm old). Soaked up a lot of suds at the Shed, Timothy's, etc. etc.

Building Chipotle, Panera Bread, etc. aroud college campuses seems rampant these days.

And I married a Dayton girl too (actually a Kettering girl but close enough).

A change for the better... times 100. The Submarine House is still there (and 2nd Time Around). A lot more places to eat (the above-mentioned plus Penn Station, Potbelly Sandwiches, Jimmy Johns, some Noodle place, another pizza place, another Chipolte type place, etc). Milanos has also been re-built and is much nicer.

Check the Nutter center and see if they have any entertainment (concerts etc.) scheduled during your time in Dayton, take in the Fair Field Commons Mall, or you could drive on up to Springfield and see what nothing to do really looks like. ;) Some think that the Oregon district is interesting, are the Bats in town, take a look at Fifth Third Field.
