Yep. He'll never hit for any power but he'll take a walk and get on base for ya. Craig Tatum is another guy who profiles as a great backup catcher.

Good to see Homer pitch out of trouble there only allowing one run. If he can pitch two good innings to finish off the day, it will be a successful outing after two bad ones.

RedlegJake
05-22-2008, 01:01 PM
I'd still prefer Andy Phillips on the bench instead of Javier, Hanigan instead of Ross and, of course, Jay in CF.

RedlegJake
05-22-2008, 01:03 PM
Holliman on 0-1 bunts, out, Homer to Barker.

RedlegJake

OnBaseMachine

Clevlen hits a 2-run double. 6-3.

Homer won't be getting called up anytime soon, and that's a good thing for his development. He obviously needs more time in Louisville.

Jake, are you watching the game? If so, is Homer throwing the curveball today or the slider?

No - just gameday. All it gives is location but no clue whether he's throwing slider or curve. Whatever he's throwing though is just dead center right now. Earlier he was hiting corners and edges of the zone. Now everything is up and coming right in there.

OnBaseMachine

Homer is a long ways off. I'm starting to think he may need to grow up a few years and get a little wiser. He's not learning from his experiences and until he starts to learn he will never improve. He may still be 2 years away and that's only if he get his head screwed on straight sometime soon.

Maybe Jocketty should call up Jon Daniels and ask the Rangers to send over a copy of that "list" they gave Volquez last year. Then Jocketty can hand that list over to Bailey and tell him to get to work.

flyer85
05-22-2008, 01:44 PM
Homer may be one of those guys who needs a change of venue. If that is case they need to deal him before he loses value. He is seemingly healthy and has quality stuff.

RedlegJake
05-22-2008, 01:45 PM
This start we saw "good" Homer and "bad" Homer. When he hits spots and stays on the edges of the strike zone he dominates. Then he started getting wild high and down the middle. It's like he lost his concentration or focus -I don't think the problem is his arm or his stuff. An error and a walk and suddenly he just came apart.

RedlegJake
05-22-2008, 01:48 PM
Meanwhile Andy Green commits an error before Brower finally gets the third out. 3 errors on the day for the Bats, they're playing like well, like the Reds.

That's exactly why I'm more concerned about Homer. He just lost it. . . . .in a AAA game nonetheless. What happens when Edwin or Dunner misplay a ball? He'd go Danny Graves on us and give up 10 runs and hopefully without the finger.

If by slump, you mean the entire year at Louisville, then you're right.

As for Maloney, he's been coming on strong after a rough start so I'd say he's more pleasant to watch than Homer. Once Bruce is called up, we'll basically have no one to watch.

Yep. Once he gets to the majors and crushes the ball, pitchers will begin to fear him and he'll get pitched around more and probably walk 70 times a season.

Honestly, the lack of walks with Bruce doesn't concern me too much. I watch about 70% of his at bats and he isn't up there chasing pitches too often (everyone chases some). He knows the strikezone, guys are just throwing the ball to it..... thats why he is hitting .368 and slugging .660+.

I was poking fun at Dusty, and not really at Bruce there. It's hard to find Jay's weakness haha.

Actually, if Bruce does come up, which would be absolutely way too soon since its obvious he still need more time down there, I would go Jason Kendall with him and bat him 9th behind the pitcher.

Alexander Smit 3-3 4.26 vs. St. Lucie's Dylan Owen 2-3 3.14
St. Lucie (Mets) is only 9-37. That's about as bad as a team can get.

Todd Frazier is struggling a bit at Sarasota, although he's slugging .551 his BA is down 76 points and he isn't walking at nearly the same clip. That's still a pretty impressive slugging mark in a pitcher's league where the heavy humid air makes slugging difficult. Pretty soon I think you'll see that OBP and BA start to rise again.

Mercker is rehabbing for Dayton. Mercker is buying the postgame dinner for the Dragons players, a tradition for big leaguers rehabbing. When Weathers was rehabbing he bought steak dinners for everyone, then the next night Subway dinners. Cost? Between 500-600 bucks a dinner. Weathers spent over a grand on the steak dinners for players and staff. Rehabbing is expensive.

Some movement is expected in the next couple of days roster-wise.

Parker, Cozart and Perales were expected to make up some of Frazier's production but they've disappointed so far.

Reed runs down a line drive to deep center for the first out in the 2nd. Then Cozart snags a bouncing grounder and gets Palisano in a close play. Liner to left that Jones catches. 3 hard hit balls, 3 nice plays (especially Cozart's play) and another 1-2-3 inning for Curtis Partch. 0-0 top 2.

Waring leads off 2nd. High fly ball to left, got under it. Phips bounces out to SS. McKennon easy grounder 4-3. Randy Boone gets an easy 1-2-3. 0-0 end of 2.

Another smash up the middle for a single. Partch is throwing strikes but Lugs are clubbing them.
Now another hit, bouncer through on hit and run, men first and third. 1 out.
Grounder to Cozart perfect throw to Feiner and Kevin drops it. No DP. Run scores. Everyone safe. E on Feiner. Easy DP blown. Runner was only halfway to first when Feiner dropped ball. No excuses on that one. Now they're saying Feiner lost he flip in the sun.
Partch gets a K on a 93 mph fastball. 2 down. Curves and fastballs. Nice velocity, Partch needs a changeup to set off those 93-94 mph fastballs.
Run is earned (can't assume a DP) but Curt should have been out of this inning with nothing scoring.
2 run double given up to Rodriguez down the RF line. 2 score, both unearned since there should be 3 outs now.
Mesaraco blocks ball in dirt to prevent a wild pitch. Partch gets K on nice curveball for 3rd out.

3-0 Lugnuts going to the third.

Mesaraco flings bat into screen missing first pitch. 0-1. Outside. 1-1. Curve strike 2. Mesaraco grounds down line to 3rd, Mes gets single and 2nd on throwing error.

Feiner. bunts to right side, had a hit but the ump calls it back, bounced off foot, foul ball. So Kevin says foul this! and lines it RF for an rbi double, Mes scoring.

RedlegJake
05-22-2008, 08:48 PM
Cozart, amazing everyone, lines a single and takes 2nd on a throwing error by the startled left fielder, driving in his 11th as Feiner scores. None out.

Justin Reed. 2-2. Ks on fastball. 1 down

Neat name Jones up. Kel-fabula-tavious grounds out moving Cozart to 3rd.

Logan Parker, whose name is really kinda cool, too, but should belong to someone who can actually hit, bangs a routine fly to RF to end the inning. 3-2 end of 3

Top 4.

Palizzano(?) hits it past McKennon and runs his way to a triple, his 4th.
Curtis Partch has the same initials as Corey. No wonder.

Foul down 3rd with Waring chasing it like Freel but fails to dive into an old lady so runs out of room. 3-1 count. 3-2 on foul back. Partch is tired of them hitting him so he walks the batter.

Cozart and Mesaraco go out to Partch and warn him about a steal which the runner at first promptly does. 2nd and 3rd.

Chavez lines a single into RF for a 4-2 Lugnut lead. For some reason they held the runner from second at third base. Maybe it was because that ball was scorched and came back in pretty quickly.

Passed ball on Mesaraco, run scores. Easy catch, he simply missed it. Now Partch walks another. Bair comes out o settle Partch down.

Moises Sierra swats a fly ball ... back...back....gone. 8-2. 5 straight men reach and all score. The consolation is that Mesaraco's passed ball run scored no matter means anything other than Mes isn't very good yet.

Now Partch hits the next guy. Promptly runs. Mesaraco can't stop the steal because Partch ignored the runner. Man on 2nd. Mes blocks another one in the dirt.

Justin Reed catches a fly for the first out, overthrows 3rd as the runner tags but Partch backed it up. Partch is gone.

Waring. 1-2 grounds out 5-3.
Denis Phipps rips a single to RF
Mike McKennon up and singles
Mesaraco knocks in a run with another single, Phipps scoring
Feiner lines a drive that almost goes over the left fielder's head but is caught. McK goes to 3rd.
Cozart flies out routinely. Inning over.

8-3 Lugnuts.

So far Mesaraco has 2 singles and a passed ball but he blocked a couple pitches in the dirt. And with that I'm going to Chattanooga.

Mesoraco is coming around a bit and now hitting .243/.351/.432, good for a .783 OPS. If he can hit enough at Dayton over the next few weeks then he may justify just staying there rather than heading to Billings. The best case scenario for the Reds would be if Mesoraco can continue hitting a bit and have a decent, full season in Dayton, and then he'd be right back on track.

Watch Paul Janish play for the Reds and you have your explanation. Good defensive shortstops are important, so sometimes you gamble that the bat will come around.

Meseraco seems to be coming around! Hope he can keep the momentum going.

Its obvious he has some work to do on both sides of the field - but he's startin to hit a bit, and I like that he did block some balls in the dirt this game. He's such a young kid, that passed ball was more than likely a small lapse in concentration.

I like what I'm seeing, especially after his start.. just hope he keeps it up
