Sam Lecure gets the first batter to pop up. The second batter strikes out. The third batter, Mat Gamel (who may be the hottest hitter in the minors right now, hitting .383/.443/.674) doubled. The 4th hitter grounds out to third to end the inning. Lecure working 88-91 with his fastball.

I wonder why they can't give radar gun readings for these minor league games on Gameday. You'd think they could just set one up that would input the velocities without having to have someone there to operate it.

That's very good to hear that he has two pitches that he can rely on. If he can throw in the changeup or another pitch he can keep hitters guessing fairly well.

Shh, don't say that too loud. Us Mez fans that have stuck with him want to keep him quiet.

One question, why is Thompson different from other top prospect pitchers we have had in that he can be rushed? I notice most people didn't want to rush Cueto and Bailey, and now everyone is clamoring for him to be up now. Is it age or length from when he was drafted ago?

I'm not clamoring to rush Thompson. People just want to rush Thompson because the Reds have strung out some recent wins and have gotten close to relevance, but not even that is an excuse to rush a pitcher.

Thompson still has less than 80 innings above High-A ball. I'd like to see him in AAA for another 10 starts/60ish innings or so. That'll take him to August, then re-evaluate the situation from there.

This is his second start at AAA right ?

You know when we were all discussing whether it should be Bailey or Maloney, actually Thompson has had the best numbers pitching this year hasn't he? I kept quiet on him because of the experience issue, and the feedback that would have followed, but he might be the right guy for the callup.

I think part of it has to do with age. He's a bit older than both Bailey and Cueto. Not saying it's a good reason, but I think that is the reason people have less of a problem with it. I think the other part of it is his command is really good too.

I'm with Cyclone. I think he needs to at least pitch in Louisville through the end of July before they consider bringing him up.

Yeah, just a solo shot though, and it was Matt LaPorta that hit it. He's gone yard once or twice this season (by once or twice, I mean 15). Lookouts trail 1-0 after 4.

Meanwhile, David Welch of the Huntsville Stars is throwing a perfect game (with 5 Ks) through four. I hope I just jinxed the crap out of him.

I'd go even further and say Thompson is in AAA for the rest of the season regardless of how well he does there. He's going to be 22 for the entirety of the season. This is his first year of real sustained success. He has a history of injury problems. Thompson is exactly the type of guy you don't want to rush.

Before 2008, he averaged 2.40BB/9IP, which is excellent, but this year, he is more than tripling that (7.40/9). I've been wondering to myself if something's wrong with him physically.

Well lets hope that he gets back to last years numbers, and maybe last night was a little bit of jitters...

Wonder what pitch he is missing with, if it is his knuckle curve or can't locate the fastball...

During the broadcast last night the announcers noted that Watson's mechanics were all over the place. Could be a reason for his control going to the crapper.
