Herrera is up for real? Link?

OMG our pitching looks soooo much better!

I would rather have merker than majewskie however.

I was looking at the probable pitchers for the next 5 games. And surprisingly felt good for once about every pitcher.

Im used to going "****" every 5th game.

I think it mostly is due to Herrera's success in AAA, where he was close to unhittable, and the fact that the Phillies have two of the best lefthanded hitters in baseball. I have a feeling the Reds have a deal with Mercker that he will go on the DL anytime to help out the roster.

I haven not seen Herrera yet, but am looking forward to it. He is supposed to be some kind of funky. Also, he's around 5'6'' and I'm vertically challenged too, so really excited to see him on the mound facing Ryan Howard.

Looks like Jocketty is not afraid to go with some youngsters, which is a very good sign.

I can back this up, got it on my phone at 1:57. I also have not been able to find a link on Rosecrans, McAlister, Fay, et al.

Mercker only pitched one time since he returned from the DL the last time. Hopefully Herrera can come up here and pitch will. The pressing issue is who will go when Bailey comes up?

does herrera throw gas

06-03-2008, 02:19 PM
i don't know much about herrera, he must be doing something right though.

06-03-2008, 02:26 PM
He only throws around 75-80 mph. Really. But he has a wicked screwball and pinpoint control. He as a rep of making hitters look really bad.

does herrera throw gas

If you consider 83-85 MPH gas, then yes.

He's a lefy with a screwball and offspeed, no gas.

Its posted now at John Fay's blog and C.Trent's blog. Good for Danny and I can't wait to see this guy! :)

I'm really excited to see this little guy out there. I imagine he'll get some WTF looks out of the batters his first time around.

Nice to see Jocketty actually using the minor leagues, rather than going out and signing retreads like the previous regime.

probably a little late, but heres the link:

That really wouldn't be possible, although I realize your comment may have been tongue-in-cheek.

The MLBPA CBA prohibits teams from disabling a player unless there is a written doctor's prognosis attesting to the injury.

Of course, if you were being facetious, my response is moot.

Personally, I LOVE this call up. In my opinion Herrera's the perfect type of pitcher to compliment the hard throwers we currently have in our pen. His off speed stuff with wicked movement will keep hitters off balance. When was the last time we saw a screwballer in the Reds clubhouse? :O) And it'll make our hard throwers look even FASTER once they come in. Just keep his outings short and he'll have success.

As for Merker...he's a good guy and I wish him the best, but he's done. These young kids have earned the chance to be here. Let them run with it.

Who goes down to make way for Bailey now?

I didnt think that transaction was completed officially yet. Could be wrong.

John Franco?

No, it hasn't been done officially yet. But the question still looms there. Who goes?

Personally I think it comes down to one of the following....

Weathers, Lincoln or Majewski down.
Valentine, Andy Phillips down.

I wouldn't mind seeing either Weathers or Valentine DFA'd, but I don't think it'll happen. Another possibility would be a DL stint for someone. Junior comes to mind. It'll just look wierd with 13 pitchers on the roster though.

John Franco?

Good call. I forgot about Johnny. I used to love watching him pitch. If Herrera turns out to be HALF as good as Franco I'd be thrilled!

Good. We'll see if he's as good as the numbers suggest in AAA. People have been begging for him to be called up for a while.

Herrera could be the one to go down Thursday.

06-03-2008, 06:37 PM
He's listedas 5'8" which I hear is a joke. No one in baseball gave much of a chance beyond AA due to his size. But he has been almost un-hittable at AA and now AAA. Pin point control is his weapon, with a dying screw ball backed up by a blazing 85 mph fastball:D

(He's most likely only up until Thursday).

Herrera will never hit 85 on the gun. He works around 80-82 and hits 83-83.5 occasionally. I don't think he has ever hit 85 on the gun.

06-03-2008, 06:55 PM
Mercker just went on the 60 day DL. Must be ailing pretty bad. Looks like Herrera might be here to stay if Dusty wants to keep 3 lefties in the pen.

06-03-2008, 09:18 PM
My new favorite midget. :beerme: That is one wicked little dude.

06-03-2008, 09:22 PM
I just want to say congratulations to Danny Herrera. Considering our recent rookie debuts...he had an unbelievably tough act to follow. And Dusty throws him out there with 2nd & 3rd, no outs, Victorino, Utley, Howard and Burrell coming up. Does it get any tougher than that? Ground out, intentional walk, K's howard, K's Burrell. That is simply impressive as heck. I love it when young kids get a chance and stand up and perform. Congrats and hope we see it for a long time.

06-03-2008, 09:31 PM
Man did he ever look nasty. And he had some great moxy too, to inherit that situation and not even look the least bit rattled. I was and am very impressed.

It really has to be hard to have a 65 MPH pitch up there after seeing 94 out of Harang all night. Just wait till they have to see him after Volquez.

06-03-2008, 09:53 PM
Or after Cueto, or Bailey, or Cordero, or Affeldt, or........

Now do you see why I was so happy he was brought up. He's a perfect foil to our ton of hard throwers. It'll really keep hitters off balance and it should make it even easier for him to succeed. His pinpoint location certainly helps too.

Anyone else have a new favorite player like me tonight after watching DR Herrera tonight? Good lord, I love watching that guy pitch!

06-03-2008, 11:06 PM
That guy was awesome tonight! I am SO impressed with his poise in that difficult situation and I hope he sticks around for a while. Good job Danny! :jump:

06-03-2008, 11:13 PM
not. going. back. down.

06-03-2008, 11:15 PM
Well, I'm not going to go THAT far. He's only 22. And rookies WILL go through rough patches. That being said, going back down to Louisville to work through problems is the only prudent thing to do. I think (and hope) that he will succeed (especially with this current staff working around him), but let's let him get his feet wet for a bit before we corronate the kid. :O)

Per Hal, Merker will retire soon.

It is the last line of the story. I like Merker and I hope he ends up as an employee of the Reds somewhere (maybe broadcasting).
