Clayton Shunick is about to pitch against Georgia on ESPN.

Yonder Alonso and Miami play Arizona at 7:00 on ESPN.

Shunick K's the first batter on three pitches. He's got nice stuff. His fastball seems to explode out of his hands and he's got a real nice curve/change. I haven't seen the splitter yet.

Shunick gets Gordon Beckham to GIDP on the first pitch.

crazyredfan40

That breaking pitch to the first batter was nasty...Really had him fooled...

He seems to like to nip the corners well, and solid location...

crazyredfan40
06-06-2008, 12:38 PM
Is the pitch he is throwing with break his splitter or his curve?

Either way he seems to have a ton of movement on his Change, Curve, and Splitter, and he throws his fastball in great spots...

He has induced 2 double plays in 2 innings, 2k's making hitter look stupid, and gave up 1 hit in which he hung a breaking ball on an 0-2 pitch, and the guy shot it into RF for a single...Also given up a walk...

Shunick got Beckham on a routine flyout to RF the next time up.

Beckham is a skinny dude.

6 K's in 5 IP for Shunick. That splitter is nasty. Brian Jordan said Shunick reminded him of Curt Schilling with the nasty splitter.

06-06-2008, 01:46 PM
Schunick with a very solid outing...He gave up the two out runs in the 3rd, but his coaches comments were you don't see that from him ever...

Really think right now he is going to get a look as a starter...His stuff is too good and he has lots of pitches...

By the way the first two innings went, I think Shunick is better off as a reliever, especially with that splitter

It wasn't like he lost velocity, or anything...He has 4 good pitches, good location, and I think that he will get his first look as a starter...

I'm really glad we didn't draft Beckham...not because I know anything about him or am saying I don't think he will be a good pro or anything, I just don't like him. He seems like he is smug?

Beckham just committed two error on the same play. He moved a few steps to his left and bobbled a groundball and then picked it up and threw the ball over the first baseman's head.

Buster Posey just hit a ball over the left field scoreboard. The scoreboard seems to be about 50 feet high to.

Let me be the first to say it.

We should have drafted him.

He'd fit perfect with the Reds defense.

Reds Fans Have Reasons To Watch the Miami Super Regional

Posted Jun. 6, 2008 1:58 pm by Matt Blood
Filed under: Draft Day

The nation’s number one ranked Miami Hurricane’s play game one of their Super Regional this evening against the Arizona Wildcats. (I’ll actually be at game two so look for a live update on the college blog from Coral Cables tomorrow night). If the series were to go three games, Enrique Garcia would be the Canes’ starter of the rubber match, and he was just selected by the Reds in the 24th round. Reds fans will obviously be watching to get a glimpse of the team’s first rounder, first baseman Yonder Alonso, but if the series goes until Sunday, they’ll have another reason to watch.

Controversy in Florida....Posey takes a 3-1 pitch that's letter high and Blue calls it a strike. Capra blows it by him with a sweet slider on the next pitch.

FSU faces elimination tomorrow. They're 3-0 on elimination games so far in this tournament.

REDS' 4th pick, RHP Clayton Shunick of North Carolina State today's final line vs. Georgia:

5.1IP, 26BF, 8ER, 8H, 3BB, 6K.

Georgia is one of the best hitting teams I've seen in a long time. Shunick won't see another team this loaded with hitters until he gets to AA.

These College World Series are won with depth in quality pitching (starters and bullpen), and Defense.

This is why I think Arizona will win the Series. It doesn't matter if they have to take out Miami to get there. I'm pretty sure they'll do it. As the announcers said, they have the best bullpen in the country.

He smoked that ball. They say the wind kept it in the park, but I think he just squared it too well and didn't get that topspin. When the centerfielder caught it, he had almost overrun it.

Alonso really reminds me of Votto. Not so much how he sets up, but his hands and the way he drops the bat head on the pitch. Two Joey Vottos in a lineup is not a bad thing moving forward...

Alonso just went yard for the second day in a row. First-inning shot the other way to give Miami a 3-0 lead. My goodness he is impressive. I am loving the pick more and more. He has a great approach, great swing and is a leader. Defensively, he looks pretty good to me, but it's hard to really tell. But hitting-wise, I have no doubt. This kid is a stud and I actually think we were lucky to get him at No. 7. They are saying he is "the best hitter in college baseball." That's pretty high praise, but that's exactly what he looks like. He is now batting over .370 with 23 HRs on the year.

And this is great experience for him playing in a Super Regional and then the CWS (if Miami holds on and wins this elimination game over Arizona... they're tied 1-1 right now in the series).

The SEC was grossly overrated this year for some reason. Getting 9 teams into the field with a possibility of only 1 getting into the CWS.

THen you have the ACC who might get 3 teams in the CWS. Why the slurpfest for the SEC?

Don't forget to mention that it was a bomb to left-center off of a lefty. Yonder is the real deal

Alex Mcree (Ga.) was the pitcher and he's not a bad LHP but he's given up (coming in) 46 Hits in 44 IP but only 5 of those were XBH's 2 Dbl's and 3 HR's. The pitch was supposed to be a FB on the outer corner and was close but left it a bit short of the corner and Alonso swung like he knew it was coming. If he hit's his spot there Alonso swings and misses, but he didn't and Alonso made him pay.

It was the go ahead run late in the game (7th) at the time, but Alas UM went down and hopefully for the sake of Alonso's development and the Dayton Dragons 2nd half Fla. St. beats them next. The game ended w/ Alonso on deck and Josh Fields on the mound getting Jemile Weeks to pop out for the final out.

DTCromer
06-15-2008, 01:37 AM
Yeah, because if UM loses 1 week earlier than if it went to the Finals, Alonso's development would seriously be hindered.

I'll never get that argument from many of the fans on this board.

The more I watch Alonso hit the more I like the pick. I absolutely love his approach at the plate. He very rarely chases a bad pitch and he's not afraid to hit to the opposite field. I think he's going to develop into a .300+ hitter who walks 100+ times and hits 30-35 homeruns and gets on base at a .400 clip. Alonso, Bruce, and Votto will form a great trio in the middle of the lineup. Now we just gotta hope EdE or Todd Frazier can become the big right handed power bat we need to stick in between the lefties.

DT that remark from me was made somewhat in jest. I think we all know a week, a month, etc isn't going to make a difference, just ready for him to start helping out Dayton hopefully. And also to start to get a read on his future with a wood bat in hand.

I LOVED seeing Yonder's fire in the dugout after the game was over. He was pissed, but it wasn't for show and he didn't take it too far. This guy has some natural fire which is going to bode well for the Reds. I love his approach at the plate and how he takes a hard (but never wild) swing at every pitch he decides to rip at. This guy was a great pick IMO after seeing both him and G.Beckham play multiple games. You NEVER draft for need or you are going to be looking for a job soon. Best player available, period. Kudos to the Reds for doing just that.
