Injured Reds to play for Class A Sarasota on Monday

MIAMI -- Shortstop Jeff Keppinger and outfielder Norris Hopper were to begin rehabilitation assignments Monday with Class A Sarasota.

Hopper was scheduled to start in the outfield while Keppinger was going to serve as the designated hitter.

The Reds have been without Hopper since he went on the 15-day disabled list on April 24 because of right elbow inflammation. A cortisone shot didn't help and prolonged his time off.

Before he went down, Hopper was batting .240 (6-for-25) in 15 games as a reserve outfielder. Last season, he often played regularly in center field and batted .329 in 121 games.

"He hasn't been here but he's not a forgotten man, you know?" Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He did a good job for us last year."

Keppinger suffered a fractured left kneecap when he fouled a ball off his leg on May 13. He is batting .324 in 39 games with three home runs and 21 RBIs.

Both Hopper and Keppinger had been working out in the extended spring camp, which ended on Sunday.

In other injury news, right-handed pitcher Josh Fogg is scheduled to start a rehab assignment on Tuesday at Sarasota. Fogg went on the 15-day DL on June 1 because of lower back spasms.
