Also on this date in 1973 the Reds acquired Fred Norman.

The Reds trade OF Gene Locklear and P Mike Jackson to the Padres for P Fred Norman (1-7). With Cincy‚ Norman will go 12-6 this year‚ the first of 7 straight seasons of 10 or more wins with the Reds.

Yes,we talked about that earlier this season. Norman was a very steady pitcher throughout the 70's with the Reds. He threw a screwball,IIRC,that was his out pitch. Also,IIRC,he won his first seven starts with the Reds after the trade.

In their careers, Concepcion made more appearances in center (8) than Stargell (6).
Of course, I don't recall many saying that Stargell was much of a fielder.

Good lord does that lineup bring back awful memories. Poor Mario Soto should have filed a legal injunction agains having to pitch in front of the '82-'84 garbage of a lineup. What's funny is that this one game shows you can throw a lineup of total offensive garbage on the field (albeit decent defensive team) and win with a dominant pitching performance.

I'm too young to remember, but what was the nature of Bench's injury that led to extended playing time for Werner?

I'm afraid I don't remember. I have the Seaver no hitter on DVD but they made no mention of it during the game.
