Phillips was lazy, but Votto should have made that a DP.

He has a strong push on here that he's good defensively but I just don't see it. He is perhaps in possession of the tools to be good, but he's nothing special over there at present.

And isn't it crazy that the other night the Cards were swinging at first pitches from Homer and getting hits and were being aggressive?

Its all about success. If you have it, what you are doing is right. If you don't, what you are doing is wrong.

Small sample but to this point I'd have to agree. His glove is okay, maybe a tad over average and he has a great arm but its not enough to offset his bat. When he first came up he seemed to be working the counts and doing the "scrappy" thing that can make a gloveman a bit more valuable. Much less so lately.

I think it matter what the BOOK is on a pitcher. You swing at the first pitch against Homer so you can get that straight fastball thigh high. Actually, in the 1st, all three Reds took mid-80's fastballs right down broadway on the first pitch.

The book, according to Chris (In Welch We Trust) is to get past the first 80 Piniero pitches......so seems to me that if the hitters followed the book, they would be taking everything they could.

Swinging on the first pitch or the first strike is ok on some occasions, especially against a pitcher like this who is pounding the strike zone. The Reds are overdoing it these days, I'll admit.

I think the offense is sputtering, in part, because Kepp, and Hairston, and Freel are all out and, tonight, Bruce is out. This team has no high OBP tablesetters left. Kepp and Hairston (and Freel when he was hot) were all getting on base and igniting things. The top of tonight's lineup with Patterson and Janish is just impossible.

Barely 3 pages to the GT in June vs the Cards at home...sort of tells the story.

As does going on 15 scoreless innings for the Reds offense - this team doesn't really deserve our time or $ at all, and Dusty the dinosaur is just awful, as bad as the Cubs fans say he was.

I'm sure it's already been discussed... I'm just now getting here. But how about Dusty the Clown going with the worst lineup possible with Corey Patterson leadoff and Janish second? And to top it off, Griffey third (Griffey should be batting no higher than fifth).

I can't believe I actually used to like Dusty and defend him. The guy is beyond retarded. "Hey, let's take by far the worst two hitters on our roster and bat them 1 and 2!"

Chris Welsh just mentioned Ron Villone's 16 strikeout game back in September of 2000 for the Reds. That was actually the very last game Villone pitched in a Reds uniform. In addition to striking out 16, Villone walked 5 batters.

Oh, and Villone threw 150 pitches in the complete game shutout.

Blitz Dorsey
06-12-2008, 08:41 PM
And in typical Reds fashion, that wasn't good enough. They went out and found much-worse lefties to take Villone's place.

Based on the replay, it looks like Arroyo asked out for some reason. Hot night, 86 pitches.

Now this sounds bizarre, but Arroyo in particular has trouble when he throws too many pitches and it often carries over to the next start. So, ok, we give him and Dusty a break on that decision.

Then, as is typical, EE and Votto team up for an error and somebody gives up a long ball and the game is tied.

Now Burton comes in and gives up a hit and a walk. Two on, one out.

Becoming difficult to watch this.

I've been very supportive of Dusty this year, I think he is a solid manager in many respects and uses his pitches well.

But there is no excuse for Patterson and Janish to be the one-two hitters. The offense is dead. He's lost Hairston, Keppinger, Freel to injury. There are no true tablesetters left.

But he has to do better than Patterson Janish.

Piniella in an interview last night said a similar thing to Dusty. I have to find someone with speed to put in the leadoff spott. You gotta have speed there.

Speed is nice but isn't OBP much more important - what good is CP's speed if he can't get on. What good is Janish in the 2 spot if his OBP and his BA are low. I don't understand this thinking and Dusty doesn't appear to be alone.

I like Janish's glove, and he should have a spot on a roster as a bench player and backup shortstop for a few years while his glove is solid and he's making league minimum. But he's a classic 9-hole hitter when he's in the lineup and nothing more.

Actually, I hope Brandon learns from that at bat. He went to the opposite field and something good happened. He could be such a better hitter if he went to right occasionally instead of pulling pitches into the ground all the time.

Must say that Brandon falls behind in the count frequently, but does have the ability to hit with two strikes. He has a good approach with two strikes, but gets into the situation probably too often.

LaRussa really overmanaged this inning IMO. I can't believe he didn't leave the sidewinder in to face CP (who doesn't discriminate when it comes to poor AB's regardless of which arm they're thrown from) so he was available to face Janish (who wouldn't have been PH for because he's the only SS) and lose Flores in the process.

Probably wanted Flores for Junior, so he made the move when CP was up. Probably wasn't too worried about Janish.

Flores was just very wild tonight, walked Janish and Jr. and then made a bad 0-2 pitch to Phillips.

Such a strange game baseball, tonight the Reds have a inconsistent pitcher of late, and a horrible lineup and they lead, 6-2.

- B. Barton flied out to right
- R. Ludwick flied out to right
- R. Ankiel grounded out to second

The Reds really need a win tonight so it'd be nice to have an easy 9th inning and at least salvage something from this series. Also, I'm hoping the Reds can put a few guys on so we get to see another Corey plate appearance too. Watching that slugger rake is worth the price of Diamond Seats every night.

It is very unpredictable but often there is a turning point. Tonight, so far, it was Flores failure to get Janish out. in the seventh. Walking Janish in that spot was terrible.

And Reds were lucky because Janish had all kinds of check swings and probably could have been rung up.

Game like this can turn on a dime.

Shouldn't be that big a surprise for a team that has the 4th (tied) most walks in the majors this year.

I hate work. First I miss Griffey's 600th homer and now I miss Bronson's homer. But the Reds are 2-0 when I work the night shift and I'm working the night shift Friday and Saturday so there's a chance they'll sweep the Sox ;)

Are we good again?

Hardly. The Reds only got 6 hits. In order to win we had a squeeze bunt by the catcher, a home run by the pitcher, 3 walks, and one big hit. Think about that. 6 runs on 3 hits, really.

This team is offensively challenged.

But, a win is a win and I'll take it.

From Fay's blog:

By the way, Bronson Arroyo left the game with cramp in his forearm. It should not have a lingering effect but his fingers were quivering to the point that he thought it was best to come out.

"I felt like I gave Dusty all I had," Arroyo said. "Sometimes you've got to be honest."

A good reason to come out after 86 pitches.

Matt700wlw
06-13-2008, 10:58 AM
That'd be why he left.

I wondered why Dusty took him out.....
