I can't wait to see Alonso signed and playing pro ball. Hopefully he begins in Sarasota but I figure he'll start in Dayton.

Ramon Ramirez goes for the Bats at 7:05 ET, Fogg goes for Sarasota at 7:00 ET(this time), and Chattanooga and Dayton are both off.

Alonso got ahead 3-0 in his second atbat and then took two strikes to make it 3-2. Next pitch he drilled it to deep center field but the wind knocked it down. It looked gone off the bat.

Pop out? That ball was a homerun if the wind isn't blowing in.

By definition, it was a pop out. ;)

I don't know that the wind is that strong. It would've made it further for sure, but it came up quite a bit short.

Good call, that's what I meant.

Alonso just singled.

We're all just guessing, but I bet Alonso starts at Billings. You hate to tell your top Rookie team that you'll not get to see your best prospects.

Also just guessing, but I can't imagine there's any chance that he'd start in Billings. Any franchise with half a brain should do the best course of action for their $8 million man, and worry about what to tell their rookie team later.

An advanced college hitter taken in the top 10 overall selections should never start in rookie ball, unless there's some kind of dramatic position switch involved.

Didn't Frazier start in rookie ball? Granted, he wasn't the Reds top pick, but still.

if he doesn't play for a while between CWS and signing, then he's probably off to Billings for at least a tuneup

if they sign him right away, then he can go to a lot of places.

Alonso just made a really nice scoop to get the lead runner doubled up at 1B.

Granted it's college ball, but Alonso's glove looks to be quite a bit better than Votto's. He's not as athletic as Votto, but he seems more polished.

Question: Does anyone who has seen Alonso play not absolutely love the pick now?

(Didn't think so. haha.)

I love the pick. I've probably seen every one of his atbats in the Super Regionals and CWS and I don't think I've seen him swing at one bad pitch yet. His plate discipline is plus-plus.

I don't think he's going to hit a lot of balls on the ground.

I don't know who to compare his swing to. The closest I can come is Geoff Jenkins -- the max-force uppercut is similar, though Alonso is center-leftcenter oriented, while Jenkins is mostly looking to pull. Anyway, Alonso's is certainly a swing to behold.

Hmmm I don't know about a Geoff Jenkins comparison. Jenkins has arguably the most drastic uppercut in the majors. I can't really think of a good comparison myself though.

I don't think he's going to hit a lot of balls on the ground.

I've been thinking the same thing.

Maybe that's part of the reason we rated him higher then the other 1st basemen. If we want to religiously avoid extreme flyball pitchers in GAB, shouldn't flyball hitters be who we are targeting?

I hate to disagree with ya but I seen him swing at consecutive pitches in one of the earlier (right after or right before we picked him) Regionals game. They looked like splitters/hard curves down and in and he swung and missed both. Granted good pitches are good pitches and they were but that seems to be his achilles heel within his discipline, down and in. Or just a bad AB perhaps.

Also I know someone stated that he has looked good defensively as well but I seen him catch one in the nose trying to dig one out and heard (on one of the threads) that a similliar play happened again (couldn't dig one out) both in the regionals.

Not trying to rag on him but it's only fair to point out his miscues as well as his positives.

Me too.

If he's healthy enough to play in AAA, I don't see what the harm could be for him to play in Cincinnati.
