It does look as if his team will be eliminated tonight though. Time to start the negotiations.

OnBaseMachine, weren't you the one telling me the other night to watch out for Neftali Soto? If so, very well done sir. I am watching, and liking!!!

Wish he was playing SS, but we need a 3B of the future too. Wish Buchholz was a SS and not a 2B, but I'll get over it.

Yep. Soto is going to be a stud. He's got quick bat speed, solid plate discipline for his age and a long wiry frame that will allow him to fill out and add even more power. He's definitely a prospect worth watching.

I was saying how last year's draft was working out well for us with our top three picks doing well (Mesoraco, Frazier, Lotzkar) but I really didn't know anything about Soto (our third-rounder last year) until you pointed it out. A few of the other early picks aren't really working out very well (Cozart, a couple pitchers, the guy who didn't sign in the fourth round and then slipped to the 13th round this year) but overall I am liking last year's draft. And really, Cozart isn't putting up terrible numbers at Dayton. But no one would argue that for a second-round pick out of college, he is behind schedule.

Was Soto expected to play 3B or was this a bit of a surprise? He was listed as a SS when we drafted him.

OnBaseMachine
06-19-2008, 12:19 AM
I've read some reports that say Soto could probably play SS right now but he's expected to outgrow the position as he's 6'3" and 180 so there's plenty of room for him to fill out. Some think he could play second base but most feel third base or left field in his future position. His bat is good enough to play anywhere. I really think he could be a steal. He just turned 19 in February so he's still very young.

Good to see Stubbs doing well. Confidence can be a huge thing no matter the sport. No question winning an AS game MVP will help the kid's confidence. He's still behind schedule IMO, but he's catching up.

The Pioneer League is a hitter friendly league, though there are some talented hitters on the team like Soto, Buchholz, and others.

I wonder why Sappelt hasn't played yet?

The Pioneer League is a hitter friendly league.

So it is normal for a team in that league to amass this many hits on a daily basis in the Pioneer League? I admit this is my first year following closely the Pioneer League.

Mustangs win big over Osprey

By Gazette News Services

MISSOULA - The Billings Mustangs clubbed four home runs - two by Neftali Soto - to defeat the Missoula Osprey 10-3 in the Pioneer League Wednesday night.

Soto drove in four runs and Mike Konstanty and Tony Brown also homered to back the combined seven-hitter from four Mustangs pitchers.

In taking the first two games of the season-opening series, the Mustangs have outhit the Osprey 31-13 and outscored them 16-9.

Starter Oscar Castro (1-0) went six innings and struck out five. He allowed three runs, all earned, before giving way to Steve Otterness, Brandon Rice and Randall Linebaugh. The four pitchers also combined for just two bases on balls.

The Mustangs (2-0) broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Soto connected for a three-run homer and Konstanty added a two-run shot as Billings took a 9-3 lead. All the runs in the inning were unearned.

Soto and Alex Buchholz each had three hits, while four other Mustangs had two hits.

The teams wrap up their three-game series tonight in Missoula. Then the Mustangs move on to Great Falls for a three-game series with the Voyagers.

Also Wednesday, right-hander Clayton Shunick, a fifth-round pick from North Carolina State, and outfielder Byron Wiley, a 22nd-round selection out of Kansas State, joined the Mustangs.

Nice to see Shunick in the fold. I think Buchholz will be one of the steals of the draft. This kid can rake. Billings roster, in fact, has a bunch of guys with good bats and the thin air and small parks should just magnify that. Soto is going to be monster in Billings, imo.

I'm developing some interest in the college outfielder haul from this year's draft. Already, you've got the following 5 guys assigned to Billings, and that does not include Tony Brown:

Stiffler, Stovall, Means, Sappelt, Wiley

Wiley had a huge sophomore year at K State. Sappelt and Means appear to be plus athletes with power and speed. Figuring that Tony Brown is going to get his share of ABs, you have to wonder how they are going to find playing time for all of these OFs.... I wonder if they'll push some to Dayton?

I believe the Reds are pretty high on Tony Brown. He was impressive in 2007 after signing for above slot money. I'll definitely be keeping an eye on him.
