Rain delay.

Reds Fanatic

Here is the Cleveland radar. Forecast for this whole weekend is bad. This could be the first of many delays.

Thompson is sure getting a baptism by fire in his first two starts. Yanks at Yankee Stadium and now the Indians against Sabathia again on the road.

After a respite the rain is falling again.

The Reds offense and their young pitchers reminds me of a Luis Tiant quote when he was young and pitching for the Indians who at that time had an awful offense and all around poor team. Tiant gyrated and had all kinds of crazy moves when he pitched and his manager Alvin Dark worried aloud to reporters that his young ace would hurt his arm. Tiant retorted in broken English, "Motion no hurt arm - no runs hurt arm" I remembered that thinking about Volquez, Cueto and Thompson and how a bad offense and poor fielding team can hurt young pitchers by making them try too hard and throw too many pitches in high stress situations. Kinda like breaking in a young QB behind a bad line in football.

I'd love to see Daryl pitch another 5-6 innings of solid ball tonight. I just hope he doesn't try to overpitch if the Reds don't score for him.

That KGJ story about sneaking iinto Buhnrer's house may have been one of the funniest I've ever heard. I love Junior and really hate seeing him decline.

Brantly was discussing Adam Dunn again hitting second in the line-up. He said Dusty has to try something to shake the lineup, never mentioning his OBP. I got the impression that he doesn't like it, though he didn't come right out and say that.

Reds Fanatic
06-27-2008, 08:12 PM
Wow. Dunn hits the ball hard but Sizemore makes a great catch in center.

OnBaseMachine

Great catch and another good AB stretching out CC in the first.

Infield single on a fastball or change. Thompson's second best pitch is his curveball yet he's only thrown it twice since coming up. The pitch calling by Bako/Ross is baffling at times.

At the very least a solid 2 and a very, very good 3... It doesn't really matter though, we know we have 3 guys who are going to be very solid in the rotation as long as something dramatic doesn't happen... Harang will rebound and hopefully Bailey will find himself... makes you wonder why that huge contract was given to Bronson... I would give the Dodgers Dunn and Bronson for Pierre, Ku, prospect and cash..... Imagine the money we could spend in the off-season then..

His minor league scouting report sounds like a #2-3, but his stuff is considerably better than I expected. I guess when the scouts said that Thompson throws 90-94, they actually meant 93-97 because he's throwing smoke tonight if the guns are correct. He already seems very comfortable throwing a changeup. If he can learn to use that slider a little more, there's a whole lot of upside.

I hope eventually someone wakes up and gets Roenicke up here to replace the nightmare that is Gary Majewski.

Maybe the Indians will be nice enough to let Majewski pitch against the Reds next inning?

Fitting Avatar

I think Jacoby needs to be sacrificed to the fans for this dreck of an offense. So maybe change your avatar to a pirate flag and ask for brook and dick to walk ye olde plank.

Peterson and Mazzone are free these days

Dunn is hitting second, when Patterson plays he hits near the bottom, Dusty took everyone's advice on the batting order. Hard to believe the Reds still can't score.

Maybe they need better hitters.

I would rather see Dunn get more at bats then Patterson or Janish.

Ballgame on a K.

Well, at this point the Reds are the 6th worst team in baseball and dropping. It's hard to watch them and believe there are 5 teams worse than they are.

You missed a very good game by Thompson with no support from his teammates, no defensive help, and a really tight zone for him by the ump. About all that's left is individual rooting now for Bruce, Votto, and the kid pitchers.

Tonight:
Reds righthanded hitters; 5 for 15, 1 BB.
Reds lefty hitters: 0 for 15, 1 BB.

This is the weakness of alternating right and left handed hitters against a lefty pitcher that is hard on lefties. It basically guarantees that our hits are spread out so much we can't score. All so that we make the opposing manager have to swap relievers more often late in the game.

Of course when our lefty power bats are oh for 15 we won't score much anyway.

CC. was tough tonight, but boy are we scuffling to score right now....

Small sample.

The hitting coaches and instructors are giving new meaning to hitting. :)

Reds hitting has made many pitchers look like CC this season.

I think that is the seventh shutout this season.

Think maybe N. Korea would take him and Patterson in a goodwill gesture? :D

No, I watched it all. Thompson was shaky some of tonight, but got the job done. It appeared he tired entering the sixth and all his pitches were up. With two on and no one out (and a run in), Bray comes in, gets a K and intentionally walks the next batter after a stolen base (why is it so easy to steal on Bray?). Majewski comes in and allows a couple of hits on hard hit balls. Ballgame.

It's really getting hard to watch for me.

REDS have scored 2 runs or less in a game 13 times out of 25 games in the month of June.

And they are 1-12 in these games, not surprisingly.

That is the same speed they are showing on the TV broadcast.

The tv might just be hawking gameday data.

I wouldn't place a great deal of emphasis on gameday velocities from a single stadium.... While it's entirely possible that DT was feeling like a Tiger last night concerning his heater, Thompson's average velocity in NY jived with the notion he works in the low 90's and can occasionally reach a little higher. Pitch f/x was suggesting that Majewski was throwing his fastball and slider 2 to 3 mph faster last night than he has all season.

Pitch f/x data is like everything else.... more is better.

They do need better hitters, and as much as it hurts me to say it, Bruce is looking awfully overmatched right now.

I think he'll learn. I hope he'll learn.

Bruce has looked extremely overmatched lately. It was almost unfair what C.C. did to him. IMO, he could use a day off, but between Encarnacion's injury and Griffey having to DH in the AL parks because of his gimpy knee, the Reds haven't really been able to give him one (unless everyone wants both Hopper and Patterson in the lineup). Hopefully they can get him out of there for a game or two soon. (Either when they get back to Cincinnati, or let Valentin DH for a game in Cleveland, since Griffey seems to be able to play in the field again.)

Patterson has the lowest OBP in 48 years of all Reds players, now that is overmatched. ;) And he never learned, neither did Dusty. :)
