I bet going from Dayton to Sarasota is like night and day. Dayton averages about 8,000 fans a night and what does Sarasota get, maybe 500 fans a night? Add in that Ed Smith Stadium is a dump plus the FSL is hard to hit in and I imagine playing in Sarasota isn't fun at all compared to Dayton or Chattanooga.

What has gotten into Alexis Oliveras this year? Whatever it is I hope he keeps doing it.

IIRC Baseball America said last year Oliveras has some nice tools but is raw. He seems to be putting them together this year. After today he is now hitting .405/.488/.514 - 1.002 OPS with a nice 6 BB/8 K ratio in 37 atbats. He's also a center fielder which is a plus.

Lotzkar - 5ip, 3h, 2bb, 0r, 7K.

Nice. Lotzkar now has 38 strikeouts in 26 innings as a 18-year old. That's 13.2 K/9. Lotzkar is a guy that has a chance to be in the Johnny Cueto/Edinson Volquez class of prospects. His stuff is top notch, the only thing he lacks is consistent command which can be expected for a 18-year old.

dougdirt
07-10-2008, 08:33 PM

80 pitch count? I like it. Keeping a strict pitch count on a 18-year old arm is very smart. BTW Lotzkar has now thrown 11 consecutive scoreless innings now.

Lotzkar is probably my favorite pitching prospect in the system. Put it this way, he struck out 7 batters in 5 innings today and his K/9 for the season went down.

Good to see thumbs with the grand slam too, he has been struggling a little bit. As long as he can get that OPS over .700 for the season I won't complain, he's still really young for Dayton.

And Stubbs with the two singles in his debut... nice night for the minor leagues all around.

What a great AA debut for Stubbs. 3-for-4 with a double and stolen base.

Chattanooga trails 7-6 after seven innings.

They left Stubbs stranded? Box score still hasn't updated...

How is Manuel getting by?

I saw him make his Dayton debut and several other times as well. I saw a pitcher with great command, and iffy stuff.I guess he is getting by on command then. I read that his fastball really explodes towards the catcher in the last 6-8 feet though and that makes it seem a lot faster than it is.

Good movement and great control will make you look really good for a while. It only takes you so far though.

I still like Pelland. I'd like to see him finish with a strong second half and get a callup to Cincy in September which is possibly because he's already on the 40-man roster.

Yeah, I'd like to see him get a late audition too to see if he can step into Affeldt's spot next season.

Nice. 4-for-5 with a double and stolen base in his AA debut. Hard to beat that. Hopefully he can stay hot and tear apart the Souther League.

When was the last time Stubby had a 4 hit game? Last year after the break when he started choking up? Did he have one then?

Today was a great day in the minors. Hope there are many more like it in the near future.

Just got done checking the boxscores and that's exactly how I felt.

Stubbs gets a Double, Three Singles, a Run, Stolen Base, and RBI in his debut.

Cumberland goes up and plays RF (or was it LF, I forgot) and gets a Double scoring 1 of only 2 runs they got in a 2-0 Win, while Dickerson plays CF and Walks and gets 1 of the 2 RBI's in the 2-0 Win with a SF.

They are wanting of starting pitching in the minors (you can never have enough), and I hope they get the best potential player they can for Arroyo regardless of how many years away he is.

The Major League Starters next season would be (in no particular order) Cueto, Harang, Volquez, and a combination of (Fogg/Thompson/Bailey/Maloney/Livingston/Jockety signing).

Are you watching the Dayton game Doug? I'm curious as to the velocity that Lotzker has this evening...I saw that he was touching 96 mph in his last start which is exceptional for an 18 year old

I was down at the game to night sitting right next to a scout behind home plate with a gun. His fastball was consistently hitting 91-92 with a decent amount of movement. Every now and then it was dropping to 89, but his breaking stuff was looking good.

Catcher Mesoraco delivers in grand style
Last year's No. 1 pick by Reds smacks grand slam in the third to lead Dayton to third straight victory.

Friday, July 11, 2008

DAYTON — Of all the skills catcher Devin Mesoraco needed to be drafted No. 1 by the Cincinnati Reds last summer, hitting is the one skill that has moved to the front while he has been with the Dragons.

Thursday, July 10, it moved way to the front and up over the left-field fence and off the concession stand — a grand slam in the third inning that propelled the Dragons to a 5-2 victory over Wisconsin, their third straight at Fifth Third Field.

"I've been trying to relax," said Mesoraco, who hit his fourth homer to go with a .251 batting average. "I was swinging at bad pitches."

Mesoraco was down 0-2 on two off-speed pitches when Wisconsin's Edward Paredes tried to slip a fastball by him. It didn't work.

A year ago, Mesoraco hit only one homer and .219 in the rookie Gulf Coast League, but has done well with the Dragons since joining them May 7 from extended spring training.

Now manager Donnie Scott wants to work with the 20-year-old a little more on his catching.

Mesoraco had little trouble with starter Kyle Lotzkar, who went five scoreless innings for the second straight game, and closer Zach Stewart's perfect ninth. Lotzkar allowed a runner in each of his innings but was never in trouble.

if he can stay at that speed and occasionally pop 94-95 I'll take that, not Cueto type numbers but very good in deed.

Anyone know how good of a defender Justin Turner is? He's really hitting well since his promotion to Chattanooga. His walk rate has improved a lot.

he's a stockier version of Keppinger, his defense is more than good enough and he's very very pesky at the plate, at Cal St he was always on base for Dorn.

Great night for Stubbs -- extremely pleased to see him get off to a good start.

I'm surprised at the limited attention given to Sean Henry. This kid came out of HS with a pretty high profile, and now he looks to be channeling his talent well. Profiles as a possible leadoff hitter or extra outfielder with speed and a little pop -- not a bad return (with Jose Castro) for a few weeks of Jeff Conine.

Very impressed with Soto, too -- slotted immediately as the 3 hitter and performing well as a 19-year-old in the Midwest League. Some nice RH bats in the system now.

I believe someone said he was hitting 95 a while back. He's only 18 and has a projectable body so he's got plenty of time to get his velocity in the consistent 94-95 area.

Lotzkar hit 96 two starts ago. Like you said, he is 18 years old. Who knows where he will be throwing in 3 years.
