I was looking at the major league transactions just now and noticed a trade of minor league players:

Acquired Minor League INF Juan Castro from the Rockies in exchange for Minor League INF Mike McCoy; purchased Castro's contract from Triple-A Norfolk and outrighted INF Freddie Bynum to Norfolk

He's showing up on their 25 man roster today.

Did we give up on him too early?

Castro and Coffey on the same day. Maybe the world is getting ready to end.

Finally, the Orioles have found someone who can fill Ripken's shoes.

Unfortunately, those are the shoes of Billy Ripken.

From the Ticker

The Baltimore Orioles on Saturday acquired veteran infielder Juan Castro from the Colorado Rockies in a minor league trade and immediately purchased his contract from Class AAA Norfolk.

The Orioles sent infielder Mike McCoy to the Rockies to complete the deal and sent outright infielder Freddie Bynum to Norfolk to open a roster spot for Castro.

Castro, 36, has batted .230 over parts of 11 seasons in the major leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds and Minnesota Twins. He was on Cincinnati's Opening Day roster before being released in April and signed a minor league deal with the Rockies.

Baltimore has had trouble filling the hole at shortstop since trading Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros in the offseason, using Luis Hernandez, Brandon Fahey, Alex Cintron, Oscar Salazar and Bynum.

Bynum hit .179 in 40 games over two stints with the Orioles.

Can it truly be considered a mistake if another team does it, too? ;)

Nope, he's heading to New York. Wayne will make sure of that. He'll push for a multi-year deal. Count on it. :D

If it's as a coach or instructor, please sign me up. I think he would make a heckuva coach, especially with his Latin roots. I would love to see him in a Mario Soto like capacity.
