Hmmmm.

Bruce?

Hairston leadoff. Keppinger second. Bruce third?

I'd say Bruce with a small chance that it is Dunn if not traded.

I say bump Brandon up from the cleanup spot and bat him 3rd.

What I'd do:

Hairston CF (with Dickerson getting a call-up and some starts)
Keppinger SS
Bruce RF
EE 3B
Dunn LF
Phillips 2b
Votto 1b
Ross C

What will happen:
Hairston CF (Patterson getting some starts as well)
Keppinger SS
Phillips 2B
Bruce RF
EE 3B
Dunn LF
Votto 1b
Ross C

If Dunn gets traded, here's what I see happening:

1B Encarnacion
2B Phillips
SS Prospect from Rays for Dunn
3B Keppinger
LF Votto
CF Hairston
RF Bruce
C Saltalamacchia from Rangers for Bailey

I'd guess Jay Bruce.

Isn't Dusty Baker a freak about mixing up lefty and righty?

I can see that lineup except switching EE and Bruce
Hairston
Kepp
Dunn
BP
Bruce
EE
Votto

But I would like to see:
Hairston
Bruce
Phillips
Dunn
EE
Votto

No but putting a High OBP guy in front of our best RISP guy is a good thing isnt it.

All about tradeoffs smart guy. :)

Good question. The Reds will have to look high and low for a .245 hitter to fill this void. ;)

Serioulsy, I'd bat Keppinger third. Everyday.

Dunn is knocking in 25% of his inherited runners this season (249 inherited runners). (RBI's-solo HR's) / inherited runners on base
Phillips is knocking in 18% of his inherited runners this season (310 inherited runners).

So, Dunn should be hitting more w/ runners on base. If he hit 4th this season (in place of Phillips) and knocked in runs at the same percentage, he would have 97 RBI's. (310 inherited runners x 25%) + 20 solo HR's. That would put him #2 in MLB and he would be leading two out of the three triple crown categories in the NL. How about them apples?

So, hit Dunn 4th and put either EE or Votto in front of him. They will see more pitches, they get on base more than Phillips, and they are capable run producers themselves.

Agree, too bad that will never happen with Dusty. Unfortunately Phillips has to bat high in the lineup because he can run a little bit.

There several guys who could do well batting 3rd. Question is----besides who bats 3rd---what do you they do with the rest of the order? If Dunn's OBP is so good, what's wrong with moving him up in the order? Let him get on base and the next guys drive him in. Whoever bats 3rd just please, put Bruce somewhere in the order besides lead-off! It's killing his development.

schmidty622

Bruce should bat 6th or 7th untill he gets his feet under him.

That would be fine with me. Just somewhere other than lead-off! I have tried to keep an open mind about Dusty, but DANG, can't he see Bruce's numbers plummeted once he was used to fill the #1 hole? Votto or Dunn would have been a better choice, and either of those would not have been appropriate, but still a smarter move!!!! It's like the last 2 years when previous Managers tried Phillips as the lead-off. It just ain't workin".

We may have a shot at .500 now that we have a legit number 3 hitter whoever that may be.

There's absolutely no reason to shoot for a .500 season. That's like shooting for fourth in the division.

"Alright, go mediocre team! We can do it!"

I think that a .500 record is a great goal. The Reds are not going to knock off the three teams in front of them, but they could build on a winning instead of losing season. For example, in the NFL teams that finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs are seen as teams that had a successful season, even without the playoffs or a championship. While 7-9 teams are looked at as failures and coaches and GM's struggle to come up with reason's why? If the Reds win two more games than they lose in 2008, that will be a positive step forward.

I would rather root for a "mediocre" team with a winning season than a less than mediocre team who lost far more than they won. Breaking .500 would be a great accomplishment for a team who hasn't sniffed the playoffs in a decade.

On the other hand, does trading Griffey for nothing for sure send us in the direction of a winning season? I don't think so. This move will not payoff for the Reds in 2008.

I hope it pays off for Junior this season though. The White Sox are now my favorite AL team. Go Pale Hose!

All this trade did was officially end an era and start a new one. Any expectations beyond that, for this year, are ridiculous.

While I agree that he shouldn't be in the lead-off spot - unless your other option is CFP - what would dictate him being in the 3 spot?

Perhaps sometime in 2009/2010 when he starts raking, but he's putting up an OPS over .750 with an OBP over .340.

Per Fays Blog looks like I was spot on about the line up. Bruce is hitting third. Hate to say I told you so BLEEDS but Dusty is that predictable.

Yeah, looks like it did pretty well...

DUHSTY, back at it.

If Dunn was batting where BP was, he's have 90 RBI's... dude just gets more runners in than anyone in the lineup, but let's continue to waste him in the 5th slot.

It's AMAZINGLY MIRACULOUS that he's able to get 40/100/100/100 where he's at in the lineup.

I might have to borrow from Manny when I say "DUHSTY doesn't Deserve a guy like Dunn on his team"...
