Patrick Bateman
08-12-2008, 07:35 PM
I have a really big problem with making the 3rd out at 3rd there to end the inning. I'm all for being agrgressive every now and then, and generally speaking, Patterson isn't a bad baserunner, but that's just inexcusable. The amount that can be gained on that play is not worth the risk. Unless Karstens is flat out ignoring you, the runner has to stay at 2nd. Took the bat right out of Dickserson's hands for the chance at a near inconsiquential gain.

He likely didn't see him.

You have about zero time to decide to swing. You can't watch the baserunner, know he has the bas stolen, and decide to swing, all at the sam time.

What you can do is see that the runner is going and decide not to swing. But it's unlikley you can decide if he has a great jump.

You are right.... But, I sure will watch and observe like crazy over the next few months to make my judgement on whether or not Dickerson can be an everyday player for us... I really feel like he can as long as we get a Burrell/Milton Bradley type left fielder... That's if Bradley plays like he is this year.... Burrell/Bradley Dickerson Bruce wouldn't be a bad outfield with Edwin, Gonzo/Kepp, BP, and Votto around the horn...

While Volquez won't admit he's tired, you can definitely see it. His velocity is only around 92-93 tonight which makes his changeup less effective, and he's leaving the ball up more as a result. Earlier in the year he was 95-97 with a devastating changeup and his pitches were always around the knees.

Owings is confirmed as one of the players for Dunner... However, he has been supposedly claimed by somebody... So we would not see him this season as the trade can't be completed until after the season...

jesusfan
08-12-2008, 08:40 PM
DENVER - Right-hander Micah Owings is one of the players to be named later in the deal that brought Adam Dunn to the Diamondbacks on Monday.

It's unclear if Owings has yet to be placed on waivers. He will have to clear waivers if he is to be traded before the end of the season.

It's possible that Owings has been placed on waivers already and was claimed by another team, at which point the Diamondbacks would have pulled him back off waivers. That would mean he would not be able to be traded until the conclusion of the regular season.
It's also unclear is Owings' physical condition could be a factor in the deal. He is expected to miss his start Wednesday with shoulder stiffness.

Owings was inconsistent in his 1 ½ seasons in the Diamondbacks rotation. He had a 4.30 ERA in 29 games (27 starts) last season, but was in jeopardy of being bumped from the rotation on several occasions. And after a strong start to this season, Owings has a 7.09 ERA since April 21.

But Owings is known as much, if not more, for his hitting. A former designated hitter in college, he has a career .313 average (35 for 112) with five home runs.

Minor league right-hander Dallas Buck also is part of the trade, but the identity of the third minor leaguer is not yet known.

Just asking here...

Could it be that the whole team was waiting around for Dunn and Griffey to get all the runs?

Nah. What we saw tonight was a pretty good pitching performance by our team and timely hitting. An unusual event to be sure, but we'll take it. Dusty's strange moves by putting Valentin at first, Bako behind the plate, and Patterson in center proved to be winners and Dickerson looked solid.

This may be an abberation. I hope not.

Just finished reading the game thread after getting home from PNC Park. There was something exciting about watching them tonight--something I didn't feel last week (and I attended last Monday and Tuesday vs. the Brewers, and Saturday vs. the Astros). I think I'm going to be upbeat about the post-Dunn era. Of course, I wish him well, and part of me still wishes he was around, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this new club grows. Some observations (and yes, I know it is only Game 1 A.D.):

1) I was pleasantly surprised with Chris Dickerson, both offensively and defensively. He may be more than the fifth OF that I thought he might be. The fly ball in the gap that he got to with ease would never have been caught if Big Adam had been out there. Of course, he won't provide the offense that Dunn did, but he has a nice stroke, patience, and speed.

2) Edinson Volquez settled down and pitched a pretty nice game. The Pirates fans sitting in my section were very impressed with his velocity. He also made a nice play to throw out Chris Gomez at third.

3) I know it is only one game, but Brandon Phillips appeared ready to take the mantle of leadership. I know some of RedsZone shudder at the thought, but that's what it looked like to me.

4) The much-maligned dynamic duo of Corey Patterson and Javier Valentin came up huge tonight. Patterson had a pair of RBI hits (one of them a double), and played his usual solid defense in CF. The only negative was him being picked off/caught stealing, but he got a huge jump on Karstens, and then inexplicibly stopped. He was 2/3 of the way to 3B before Karstens even looked at him. If he had kept going, I think he would have made it. As for Javy, his home run was a bomb--right out the front door. And he made a couple of outstanding defensive plays at 1B--the play he made to end the inning on Doug Mxyzptlk's ball was the defensive play ofthe game, and really sucked the life out of the Pirates and the crowd.

5) I am a big fan of Jeff Keppinger, but he is really struggling at the plate. I think the Reds should sit him for two or three games, and play Jolbert Cabrera at SS. When Kepp gets back in the lineup, bat him seventh (or maybe sixth vs. lefties).

The Reds win the first game post Dunn and folks are rushing to prolcaim the after Dunn era a success. Sorta like when the manager gets fired and the team goes on a 3 game win streak.

The big problem is the same players have the same level of tallent, one nice game notwithstanding.

Javy did have a nice game. Stick him in there everday and watch him wilt. Patterson will continue to play to the back of his baseball card. etc etc. Dickerson looked good, but lots of rookies have had good starts (not that this even qualifies yet) and cooled off (see Bruce, Jay).

It was great to win. It was nice to have a lead after the first inning. It was good to see some nice performances. How am I kidding, it was awesome to win.

But at the end of the day, we just won 1 whole game against Pittsburg. Get back to me when the Reds rip off 7 in a row and finish the season after a massive winning streak. Then we'll talk about "the success of the post Dunn era".

IF there is going to be a success or failure following the Dunn trade it will not be felt for years... IMHO.

Also, fear is a great motivator - the remaining players on the team are on edge... again, IMHO.

I agree, which is why I said it was awesome to see a win for a change. Just seeing a lead in the first inning was refreshing enough for me.

I'd rather they had signed Dunn but there are more ways to win baseball games than just via the Big Donkey. I don't care if they win with nothing but guys who bunt. Walt will rebuild the team and we will win games post Dunn. A love for a team doesn't/shouldn't rest soley on one player.

And if this turns into a dump Jr/Dunn with no other moves Ill be mad but I wol't root against them. Probaby be more apathetic towards the team, but wolnt root against them.
