This Friday, August 15th is looking like it could be an exciting day for Reds fans. Why is August 15th such an important day?

1. This is the last day college players can sign with the organization that drafted them in the June draft. As we all know Yonder Alonso hasn't signed yet though Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus both believe he will sign.

2. August 15th is also the day highly touted Venezuelan prospect Yorman Rodriguez turns 16 and is eligible to sign with a major league team. Yorman has long been rumored to have a deal in place with the Reds and Friday is when we should finally know if he officially signed with the Reds or not.

3. While I don't believe he's in the deal, there have been rumors that Jarrod Parker may be the second PTBNL in the Adam Dunn deal. If that's true, and I remain skeptical that it is, this is the first day Parker is eligible to be traded since he didn't sign until August 15th, 2007. Again, I find it unlikely that he's in the deal but it's still worth keeping an eye on.

This could be an exciting day as the Reds could add three big time prospects to the organization in the best case scenario. Worst case scenario is they only add one of these players.

Technically worst case scenario would be that we get none of them.... but I like the all 3 option.

I think we're a lock to get one of Alonso/Yorman.

I'd like to see a four-bagger. Sulbaran.

It's not going to be Parker, it's going to be Castillo.

I forgot about Sulbaran. Good call.

I've thought it would be Castillo all along. Makes a lot of sense. He's getting ripped over on the ORG but the kid had a very solid 23 year old season last year at Mobile, is a switch hitter, and apparently is good defensively. A Castillo-Hanigan or Castillo-Tatum pairing could be quite solid in a year or two.

An Arizona newspaper is saying the third player is a pitcher on the 40-man roster, so that eliminates Wilken Castillo.

What about Billy Buckner or Esmerling Vasquez? Those guys are decent, right?

Buckner is currently in the major leagues so it can't be him. My guess is it will be Esmerling Vasquez. He was named the Diamondbacks minor league pitcher of the year in 2007 and was later selected to pitch in the Arizona Fall League. He pitched well in the AFL but in his last start he dove for a bunt and landed awkwardly and torn his labrum. He didn't have to undergo surgery but he still missed the first month of this season as he worked on getting his shoulder back to normal strength and so far his stats have been pretty bad since returning. Apparently his velocity is back to normal but his command is nowhere near where it was last season. When he's right he throws his fastball in the 92-94 range and can tough 95 and his changeup is rated as the best in the Arizona system.

I'm stickin with my call that we get Yorman. I would not be surprised either way about Alonso. I'm gonna be upset if we lose him though.

So far, so good. It's not even Friday yet and the Reds have already signed one of these guys as Juan Carlos Sulbaran signed today for 500,000 dollars.

something I didn't know is that Sulbarans' teammate Eric Hosmer is currently playing ball for the Midland Redskins and then found this link http://www.midlandredskins.org/players.html

I had no idea that many players have been in that league.

August 15th has come and gone and it indeed turned out to be an exciting day for Reds fans. The Reds were able to sign both Yonder Alonso and Yorman Rodriguez, two big time talents who strengthen the organization even more. Jarrod Parker was not the third PTBNL in the Adam Dunn deal but that was never really a realistic option. Along with Yorman and Yonder, the Reds also added a couple other talent we weren't expecting in Juan Carlos Sulbaran and lefty Matt Fairel. All in all this turned out to be a great day for the Reds as they added a ton of talent to the organization.

Bad day for the Big Foot fans though
